No More Stacked Dual Screens: How Pokémon Fulldex Runs 7 Classic DS Pokémon Games in 16:9 at 60 FPS on Switch and PC

Pok\u00e9mon Black 2 running in 16:9 widescreen at 60 FPS via Pok\u00e9mon Fulldex on Nintendo Switch and PC

Playing mainline Nintendo DS classics on a modern television or a widescreen handheld has long forced players into an awkward compromise: stacking two tiny 4:3 boxes vertically or shrinking the touch screen into a cramped corner. Indie developer mamesj has just eliminated that visual bottleneck with Pokémon Fulldex (originally launched as the open-source repository pokemon-ds-widescreen-switch). Updated in early November with release fulldex-2026-11-05b, this unified launcher makes seven flagship Nintendo DS Pokémon titles playable in a single, unified 16:9 widescreen picture at 60 FPS across modded Nintendo Switch consoles, Windows PC, Mac, Steam Deck, Android, and iPhone.

Seven Gen 4 and Gen 5 Classics Unbound From Dual-Screen Borders

Despite frequent fan speculation surrounding the Nintendo Switch Online library, this release is not an official port from Nintendo or The Pokémon Company. While collectors continue to track Pokémon Japan's hidden countdown sparking hope for Ruby and Sapphire on Switch by late November, the open-source modding community has stepped up to preserve the DS era on modern displays.

In its current build, Pokémon Fulldex supports seven core DS entries out of the box across English, French, and Spanish ROMs (with German, Italian, Japanese, and Korean support in beta, each maintaining dedicated save files such as black2.sav or soulsilver.sav):

  • Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver
  • Pokémon Platinum (alongside experimental support for Diamond and Pearl)
  • Pokémon Black and Pokémon White
  • Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2

Beyond the DS lineup, the launcher includes a dedicated Game Boy Advance tab supporting widescreen enhancements for Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen, and the ROM hack Ultra Violet, while 3DS installments (Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, X, Y, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon) are officially listed as coming soon.

How the Dynamic Layer Merges Both DS Screens Into 16:9 at 60 FPS

Where standard emulators merely stretch the image or place two 256×192 screens side by side, Pokémon Fulldex pairs a built-in melonDS emulator core (and mGBA for GBA titles) with an intelligent state-tracking layer forked from ClickingMaster's ssrecomp project, utilizing symbol tables from community decompilations (pokebw2, aletheia, and pret/pokeplatinum).

By monitoring what the game is doing in memory in real time (whether the player is walking through the 3D overworld, browsing menus, or issuing commands in battle), the software dynamically rearranges the presentation:

  • GPU-Extended 3D Worlds: Three-dimensional environments (such as Castelia City's piers in Black 2 or Johto's routes in SoulSilver) are not stretched; instead, the GPU renders a wider field of view in true 16:9, extending skies and scenery to the edges of the display.
  • 60 FPS Frame Interpolation: While the original DS 3D engine was locked to 30 frames per second, Fulldex injects interpolated in-between frames to deliver smooth 60 FPS traversal and combat.
  • Clean Single-Screen Battle UI: Touch-screen move buttons and HP bars are tucked neatly along the sides of the main battle view without obscuring the Pokémon sprites. In Platinum, the Pokétch remains one button press away via the screen-swap shortcut.

720p deko3D Rendering on Switch and Up to 4K on PC

On a homebrew-enabled Nintendo Switch, the all-in-one package (pokemon-ds-wide-all-switch.zip) extracts straight to /switch/pokemon-ds-wide/ on the SD card. The application taps directly into the console's low-level deko3D graphics API to draw the widescreen 3D world at 720p and 60 FPS in handheld mode, verified on a Switch OLED. Using a built-in forwarder tool based on sphaira and nx-hbloader, players can also generate individual Switch HOME Menu icons with box art for each game.

On Windows and Linux PCs supporting OpenGL 4.3, internal 3D rendering scales from 1080p up to 1440p (2K) and 2160p (4K) while keeping 2D pixel sprites razor-sharp. The launcher also bundles native RetroAchievements login, up to 4x fast-forward on the right trigger, save states, and DeadSkullzJr's cheat database. Following strict legal emulation standards (Bring Your Own ROMs), the GPL-3.0 GitHub repository contains no copyrighted game assets: users must supply their own legally dumped ROM files in the roms folder.

My Field Notes

Seeing Pokémon Black 2 or SoulSilver running in native 16:9 at 60 FPS on a handheld screen highlights just how well Game Freak's hybrid 2D-sprite and 3D-world aesthetic has aged. Even as Nintendo prepares its crucial 2027 generational leap with Pokémon Winds and Waves on Switch 2, the franchise's DS masterpieces remain locked to aging cartridges that routinely fetch well over a hundred dollars on the secondhand market. By solving the dual-screen puzzle without compromising the original pixel art, mamesj and the ssrecomp contributors have delivered the exact widescreen preservation showcase fans have spent years asking for.
