“A Crucial Release”: Why Nintendo Is Betting Switch 2’s Third Year on Pokémon Winds and Waves in 2027

Pokemon Winds and Waves Nintendo Switch 2 2027 Shuntaro Furukawa

During the investor Q&A session accompanying Nintendo's second-quarter financial results for fiscal year 2027, company president Shuntaro Furukawa outlined the strategic weight of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves for the future of the Nintendo Switch 2. Scheduled to launch exclusively on the new hybrid console in 2027, Game Freak's tenth-generation mainline duo is officially viewed by Kyoto's leadership as a cornerstone release as the hardware enters its third year on the market.

When asked by investors how the upcoming mainline entries will impact hardware momentum following the spring success of Pokémon Pokopia, Furukawa emphasized the franchise's historical role as a system-seller while acknowledging The Pokémon Company's operational structure.

From Pokémon Pokopia to Generation 10: Shuntaro Furukawa's Hardware Strategy

In the official English Q&A transcript published by Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa detailed why the company plans to throw its full marketing and distribution weight behind the 2027 launch:

"As the business development of the Pokémon franchise is managed by The Pokémon Company, an affiliate accounted for by the equity method, I will refrain from providing specific details. However, Pokémon titles have historically played a vital role in the adoption of our dedicated gaming hardware. Pokémon Pokopia, released this March, has also been a major driver for Nintendo Switch 2 sales."

Furukawa directly connected the momentum of the franchise's 30th anniversary celebrations for Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green to next year's tenth-generation arrival:

"This year marks the 30th anniversary of the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, and The Pokémon Company is generating significant excitement through various initiatives, including the trading card game. We recognize that Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, a brand-new title scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 next year, will be a crucial release as the console enters its third year on the market; therefore, we intend to do our utmost to maximize its sales."

Built Exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 Hardware

Unlike cross-generation releases that bridged the gap with the original 2017 hardware, Pokémon Winds and Waves and its 54 confirmed returning creatures are built from the ground up exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. Revealed in February 2026 alongside the new starter trio Browt (Grass), Pombon (Fire), and Gecqua (Water), the tenth-generation entries take players across a sprawling tropical archipelago shaped by shifting ocean currents and wind patterns.

To power this seamless maritime world, Game Freak is leveraging its new water fluid simulation technology running three times faster than traditional methods. By singling out Winds and Waves as a "crucial release" for 2027, Nintendo is counting on Generation 10 to trigger the next massive wave of family and casual upgrades from the original Switch to the Switch 2 ecosystem.

My Perspective

In Shuntaro Furukawa's typically measured corporate vocabulary, calling a single upcoming title a "crucial release" in front of shareholders speaks volumes. Year three of any console lifecycle is the decisive turning point where early adopters already own the hardware and Nintendo has to convince millions of casual families to make the jump. Because Pokémon Winds and Waves leaves the original Switch behind completely, it will serve as the ultimate hardware catalyst for the Switch 2 in 2027.
