Console Mods, Dual-Wielding, and Half of Cyberpunk 2's Quest Team Hired From Modding: Inside Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 2.5

Six years after its turbulent launch, Cyberpunk 2077 continues to receive major content drops. CD Projekt Red has surprise-released Patch 2.5, officially titled the Edgerunners 2 Update: Broken Dreams, as a free download across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Mac, and Nintendo Switch 2. Beyond adding dual-wielding combat and a new anime prologue quest, the update brings official community mod support to consoles and sheds new light on the studio's hiring pipeline for Cyberpunk 2.
In-Game Cross-Platform Mod Support Powered by mod.io
The headline technical feature of Patch 2.5 is the built-in integration of mod.io directly inside the game's main menu. For the first time in the franchise's history, players on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 can browse, download, and toggle community-made mods without needing a PC.
More than 50 curated community mods are available at launch, spanning cosmetic overhauls, quality-of-life tweaks, and expanded quest and romance content. Speaking during the studio's official REDstreams broadcast, associate game director Paweł Sasko described the new in-game browser as a "buffet" designed to keep Night City fresh even after 800 hours of play. On consoles, enabling mods on a save file disables achievements and trophies.
This official cross-platform rollout arrives right as the PC community pushes the REDengine into uncharted territory, most notably with the free NightCoop mod launching its 8-player story co-op open beta this week.
Half of Cyberpunk 2's Quest Team Started as Modders
While discussing why native mod support matters so much to CD Projekt Red in 2026, Paweł Sasko shared a striking detail about the development of Cyberpunk 2 (formerly codenamed Project Orion). According to the associate director, roughly 50% of the quest design team currently building the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel are former modders.
Sasko noted that building custom quests and systems for The Witcher 2, The Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 acts as a practical "foot in the door" into professional game development. By learning how the studio's quests and narrative scripts are structured from the inside, standout community creators were recruited directly into CD Projekt Red's Warsaw and Boston offices.
"Clampdown" Prequel Quest, Dual-Wielding, and Glamdocs in Patch 2.5
Alongside cross-platform modding, the Broken Dreams update sets the stage for the second animated series produced in partnership with Studio Trigger. While the showrunners previously explained why David Martinez will never return in Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2, Patch 2.5 introduces a brand-new prologue side quest titled "Clampdown".
- The "Clampdown" Side Quest: Created in collaboration with Studio Trigger, this quest takes place right before the brutal events of Edgerunners 2. Players can trigger it after completing the main story mission "The Heist" and two gigs for fixer Wakako Okada, who then sends V a text message. Finishing the mission rewards a 5-piece gear set tied to the character King.
- Dual-Wielding Combat ("Double Trouble"): Paying tribute to Jackie Welles, a new perk called "Double Trouble" has been added to the Cool skill tree, unlocking the ability to dual-wield two Power pistols or revolvers simultaneously.
- Five Specialized "Glamdocs": Marked with spray-paint icons across Night City's map, five new Glamdoc vendors allow V to customize the visual skins, color schemes, and inspection animations of arm cyberware including Mantis Blades, Gorilla Arms, the Monowire, and the Projectile Launch System.
- HKGN 102.0 FM Radio and DLSS 4.5: The update also adds the HKGN 102.0 FM radio station featuring tracks from the new anime series, new NPC hairstyles for V, and DLSS 4.5 support on PC.
My Take
Seeing CD Projekt Red deliver dual-wielding, a voiced anime tie-in quest, and console mod support for free six years after launch is remarkable on its own. Yet the real takeaway from Patch 2.5 is Paweł Sasko's revelation about Cyberpunk 2: while some publishers lock down their files or send cease-and-desist letters, CD Projekt Red treats its modding community as its primary talent pipeline. Bringing curated mods to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will keep Night City thriving for years while inspiring the next wave of quest designers.
