Dozens of Fan DMs and a Tragic Ending: Why David Martinez Will Never Return in Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2

Night City never forgives and never offers second chances to those who burn out too fast. As CD Projekt Red and Netflix finally revealed the explosive first trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, fans immediately searched for any sign of David Martinez.
Showrunner and lead writer Bartosz Sztybor wasted no time putting those wild theories to rest. The tragic hero of the debut season is definitively not coming back, and that creative decision remains locked in stone.
A Firm Stance Against Daily Fan Pressure
Ever since the heartbreaking 2022 finale, requests from the community have never stopped pouring in. Bartosz Sztybor revealed that he receives dozens of direct messages every single day pleading with the creative team to find a narrative loophole and resurrect David Martinez.
His response to the audience remains resolute: bringing David back would completely ruin the emotional gravity of his sacrifice against Adam Smasher. According to the showrunner, fans believe they want him back, but delivering that easy fan-service would betray the core identity of the series.
Night City chews up its legends at the very height of their ambition. Turning a fatal destiny into a convenient fake-out would diminish everything the original anime achieved.

Studio TRIGGER Returns for Ten Standalone Episodes
Japanese animation powerhouse Studio TRIGGER originally treated Edgerunners as a strict one-off venture. However, the creative team ultimately agreed to dive back into Night City with an even more visceral, rebellious, and unrestrained visual style.
Season 2 spans ten standalone episodes driven by a completely fresh cast of original characters. The story follows Roman Carax and Talia Yang as they get dragged into a deadly downward spiral across the unforgiving corporate underworld.
This fresh journey explores the harsher edges of the metropolis without leaning on past nostalgia or convenient safety nets. The narrative promises high-octane cyberware combat and pure neon-drenched mayhem.
The wider franchise keeps expanding rapidly across gaming and entertainment. Fans can also look forward to the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 live-action movie developed with Paramount.

My Take
Refusing to bring David Martinez back despite constant fan begging is a tremendous sign of artistic bravery. Night City was never built for fairy-tale happy endings, and that ruthless fate is exactly what made the original run unforgettable.
Seeing Studio TRIGGER and Bartosz Sztybor start from scratch with brand new characters to tear apart guarantees we will not get a safe or diluted nostalgic sequel.
