The Outlast Trials Shadowdrops on Nintendo Switch 2: 46 GB File Size, Crossplay, and eShop Price

Nobody saw this coming on the late October release calendar. Without a single pre-order teaser or countdown stream, Montreal studio Red Barrels has officially shadowdropped a native Nintendo Switch 2 version of The Outlast Trials today, October 27, 2026. Just four days ahead of Halloween, the studio's visceral cooperative survival horror experience is live right now on the Nintendo eShop.

While Nintendo fans are busy preparing for the October 2026 Nintendo Indie World Showcase on Switch and Switch 2, Red Barrels has beaten the Halloween rush by quietly unlocking the doors of the Sinyala Facility for Nintendo's newest hybrid hardware.

Nintendo eShop Price, 46 GB Install Size, and Full 4-Player Crossplay

Available immediately as a digital download on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop, The Outlast Trials carries an official price tag of $39.99 in North America and €38.99 across Europe. Players clearing space for Murkoff's psychological experiments will need 46 GB of free storage on the console's internal UFS 3.1 drive or a compatible microSD Express card.

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date: Out now as of October 27, 2026 (surprise eShop shadowdrop).
  • Official eShop Price: $39.99 USD / €38.99 EUR.
  • Download File Size: 46 GB of storage required.
  • Online & Co-Op Requirements: Playable solo or in 2-to-4 player co-op; requires a persistent internet connection and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Cross-Platform Support: Full day-one crossplay matchmaking with PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

Because full cross-platform matchmaking is enabled out of the box, Switch 2 Reagents are plugged directly into an active global player pool that recently hit an all-time peak of nearly 148,000 concurrent players on Steam earlier this month.

Season 7.2, Geister 2026 Halloween Event, and Invasion PvP Included at Launch

Rather than launching a few patches behind other platforms, the Nintendo Switch 2 edition arrives at full content parity with the current live build. As soon as new players step into the Sleep Room, they have immediate access to everything introduced in the Season 7.2 and Geister 2026 update for The Outlast Trials, which runs through December 8, 2026.

Set during the height of the Cold War, the game casts you as an involuntary human test subject abducted by the Murkoff Corporation to endure brutal brainwashing and mind-control therapies. Stripped of conventional firearms while hunted by deranged Prime Assets like Mother Gooseberry, electric-baton-wielding Sergeant Leland Coyle, and sawed-off shotgun mobster Franco "Il Bambino" Barbi, survival hinges entirely on stealth, night-vision battery management, and keeping your sanity meter intact.

Switch 2 owners get the complete roster of therapies and endgame systems right from day one:

  • All Six Upgradeable Tactical Rigs: Customize your loadout with the Stun, Blind, Heal, X-Ray, Barricade, or Jammer Rigs via facility engineer Cornelius Noakes, alongside prescription perks from Nurse Emily Barlow.
  • Geister 2026 Halloween Event & Amelia's Escape: Tackle the newest Genesis MK-Challenges (Compel the Children and Sanitize the Factory), harvest organ samples for bonus tokens, survive heightened Skinner Man hallucinations, and extract Escape Intel Schematics for Amelia's community event.
  • Invasion PvP & Escalation Therapy Rework: Jump into the asymmetric Invasion mode to stalk fellow Reagents as a knife-wielding Imposter, or test your squad's endurance in rogue-lite Escalation Therapy featuring the brutal Breaking Point no-cooldown-recharge variator at Trial 31 and beyond.

My Perspective

Let's be real for a second: experiencing the grime-soaked hallways of the Murkoff Corporation, Mother Gooseberry's unhinged drills, and Geister organ harvesting on the same handheld screen where you play Mario Kart feels delightfully unhinged. It is the exact kind of tonal whiplash that proves Nintendo's new hybrid hardware has shed the old technical ceiling that used to keep modern Unreal Engine live-service games locked to home consoles and PC.

What makes this surprise drop even sharper is the timing. Launching unannounced on October 27 at $39.99 with full crossplay already wired into PC, PS5, and Xbox Series lobbies means zero dead queues on Halloween night. Throwing on a pair of headphones, turning off the bedroom lights, and trying to outrun Sergeant Leland Coyle in handheld mode under the covers is easily going to be the most nerve-wracking way to spend Halloween week.
