No $800 Upgrade Required: Sony Rolls Out QSSR AI Upscaling to Standard PS5 for Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei

The announcement caught the industry completely by surprise. While players assumed machine learning reconstruction would stay locked behind the PS5 Pro, Sony officially rolled out QSSR for the standard PlayStation 5 console.
Dubbed Quick Spectral Super Resolution, this new library arrives as a free update for base Fat and Slim models. It directly tackles the visual compromises players have faced since the hardware debuted in 2020.
An Unexpected AI Leap for the Standard PS5
Until now, hitting 60 frames per second required performance modes that noticeably compromised image clarity. Traditional spatial and temporal upscalers like early FSR revisions frequently introduced shimmering and soft foliage.
QSSR changes the equation by processing frame data through lightweight neural inference models. The result is a remarkably sharp 4K presentation running at 60 FPS without aggressive drops in native rendering resolution.
How Project Amethyst Brings Machine Learning to RDNA 2
The real breakthrough lies in the engineering behind the silicon. While PSSR on PS5 Pro relies on dedicated tensor units, QSSR is the direct product of Project Amethyst, a joint technical initiative between Sony and AMD.
Sony engineers optimized the inference workload to run directly on the custom AMD RDNA 2 graphics architecture of the original PS5. The process executes seamlessly within the standard rendering pipeline while consuming only a minimal GPU performance budget.
Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei Lead the 4K 60 FPS Transition
This is far from a theoretical technology demo. Two flagship first-party blockbusters have already deployed official patches supporting QSSR out of the box.
Insomniac Games has updated Marvel's Wolverine, delivering clean specular highlights on Logan's claws and intense combat particle effects at a rock-solid 60 FPS.
Meanwhile, Sucker Punch applies the algorithm to the vast wilderness of Ezo in Ghost of Yōtei. Wind-swept grass and autumn leaves retain sharp geometry without temporal fizzle or ghosting artifacts across the PlayStation first-party lineup.
What QSSR Means for the PS5 Pro Value Proposition
By delivering sophisticated software upscaling to hardware released six years ago, Sony dramatically narrows the visual divide between the base console and the PS5 Pro. Spending $800 on a mid-generation refresh just became a much tougher sell.
More importantly, it demonstrates how smart algorithmic development can extend hardware longevity well past its initial horizon. Base PS5 owners just received the most significant free graphics upgrade of this generation.
