84 on Metacritic and 190,000 Steam Players Without Game Pass: How Modern Warfare 4 Delivered Call of Duty's Best Launch in 15 Years

Modern Warfare 4 campaign

Following a turbulent cycle for Black Ops 7 last year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched globally on Friday, October 23, 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Wrapping up its opening weekend, Infinity Ward's latest flagship entry holds an 84 out of 100 on Metacritic, marking the highest critical score for a mainline Call of Duty release in fifteen years.

Players have to look all the way back to the original Modern Warfare 3 in November 2011 to find a stronger critical reception for the series. That critical rebound is matched by impressive PC player numbers, even after Activision and Microsoft made a bold pivot away from Day One subscription access.

Over 190,000 Concurrent Steam Players Without Day One Xbox Game Pass

Unlike recent franchise installments, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 did not launch Day One on Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass. Every operator dropping into the servers this weekend paid full price for their copy, with Microsoft signaling that the shooter will not join the subscription library until late 2027.

That commercial gamble has paid off on PC. On Steam, Infinity Ward's shooter surged past 190,000 concurrent players during its opening forty-eight hours while maintaining an 80% positive review rating from verified buyers.

Player satisfaction stems directly from how much content ships on disc and day-one download. Where the 2023 reboot drew heavy fire for its rushed Open Combat campaign missions and recycled maps, Infinity Ward rebuilt all three core pillars from the ground up.

Mads Mikkelsen as The Archer, 20 Launch Maps, and DMZ's Return in Hajin

The single-player campaign drops padded sandbox objectives in favor of tight, cinematic shadow operations across the Korean Peninsula. Fighting alongside Captain John Price and Private Park in Task Force 141, players hunt down a covert network led by "The Archer," a chilling primary antagonist portrayed by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen.

On the multiplayer front, the game ships with 20 launch maps, headlined by 12 brand-new 6v6 arenas built around clean sightlines and fast engagements. The standout addition of opening weekend is the modular Kill Block training facility, a shifting arena capable of rotating its floor slabs into more than 500 distinct layouts for Gunfight and 10v10 playlists.

Grinders already pushing through our Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Prestige levels and Level 1,000 rewards guide have also flocked to the overhauled DMZ extraction mode. Set across the coastal and mountainous metropolis of Hajin (which will also serve as the new Battle Royale map for Call of Duty: Warzone when Season 1 arrives), the mode introduces dynamic weather, full day-and-night cycles, and high-stakes faction reputation contracts.

Weekend Hotfixes Target Nintendo Switch 2 Stability and DMZ Exploits

A launch of this scale inevitably exposed a handful of early exploits. As squads tested our best zero-recoil Kastov 762 loadout in Modern Warfare 4 and extracted high-tier loot from Hajin, several technical hiccups surfaced across core playlists.

Infinity Ward responded quickly on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25 with back-to-back hotfixes across all platforms. Here are the key fixes deployed over launch weekend:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Optimization: Resolved memory leaks and frame hitching during heavy transitions in Ground War and DMZ on Nintendo's hybrid hardware.
  • DMZ Gunsmith and Cash Fixes: Patched a bug where equipping specific camos or reticles inside the DMZ Gunsmith mistakenly deducted player cash, and blocked an exploit allowing DMZ weapon builds to carry over into Core Multiplayer.
  • Hajin Terrain and Kill Block Geometry: Cleaned up rock collision traps in Hajin where operators could get permanently stuck, and tightened boundary walls during slab transitions on Kill Block.
  • Search and Destroy Defuse Patch: Eliminated a critical exploit that allowed defenders to defuse the bomb from unintended distances or behind solid cover.

"With an 84 on Metacritic, 20 maps on day one, and a fully realized DMZ sandbox in Hajin, Infinity Ward has delivered its most complete launch package since 2011."

My Perspective: Giving Infinity Ward Proper Development Time Changes Everything

After the sour taste left by 2023's rushed campaign and growing franchise fatigue, I did not expect Modern Warfare 4 to land with this level of polish on opening weekend. Seeing critics and 80% of Steam buyers align on a mainline release proves a simple truth: when Activision gives Infinity Ward the breathing room to craft a focused thriller starring Mads Mikkelsen alongside twelve original 6v6 maps, the gunplay still has no equal.

Skipping Day One Xbox Game Pass could easily have backfired on PC, yet clearing 190,000 concurrent players at full retail price shows that players will gladly show up when the day-one package feels complete. Now the real test is whether weapon tuning and server stability hold firm as Season 1 brings Hajin into Warzone.
