16+2+2 Phase VRM, PCIe 5.0, and ARI Anime Styling: Gigabyte Unveils the Black B850 AORUS ELITE-P AM5 Motherboard

Previously associated with all-white builds through its ICE variant, Gigabyte's anime-inspired motherboard lineup is shifting to a stealthier palette. Through the official channels of its AORUS gaming division, the Taiwanese hardware maker has unveiled the black edition (dubbed Dark) of its full-size ATX Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE-P motherboard. Built for AMD Ryzen processors on the Socket AM5 platform, this new variant drops the ICE suffix while retaining the full AORUS DesignLab aesthetic centered around the brand's sleepy mascot Ari, backed by a robust 16+2+2 phase power delivery system, full PCIe 5.0 connectivity, and Wi-Fi 7.
From Polar White to Matte Black: AORUS DesignLab and ARI Styling on a Dark PCB
After introducing its anime mascot on an initial micro-ATX board and expanding the concept to the white B850 AORUS ELITE-P ICE and the GeForce RTX 5060 AORUS Ari 8G graphics card, Gigabyte is now catering to PC builders who prefer dark cases and tinted tempered glass panels. On this black B850 AORUS ELITE-P, the six-layer matte PCB and brushed aluminum heatsinks adopt a deep charcoal finish accented by steel gray and signature AORUS orange highlights.
The primary shroud covering the rear I/O and VRM heatsink assembly features a vertical backlit display window branded AORUS DesignLab. It showcases artwork of Ari wearing her cat-eared hoodie and rubbing her eyes awake, framed by an illuminated orange AORUS logo and four subtle cat paw prints at the corners.

That visual attention to detail extends to areas motherboard manufacturers typically leave bare. The plastic Socket AM5 protective cover carries its own custom illustration of a sleeping Ari, while the top edge of the VRM heatsink and the lower PCB near the audio circuitry feature subtle cat silhouettes and paw motifs. Even the back of the motherboard receives a large two-tone gray and orange graphic depicting the stylized AORUS falcon emblem across the solder traces.
16+2+2 Phase VRM, DDR5-8200, and PCIe 5.0: A Serious AM5 Foundation for Ryzen 9000 and X3D CPUs
Beneath the collector-focused exterior, the underlying hardware makes no electrical compromises. The Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE-P is powered by a 16+2+2 phase Twin Digital VRM cooled by hefty VRM Thermal Armor Advanced heatsinks equipped with a heatpipe and 5 W/mK thermal pads. Fed by dual 8-pin EPS power connectors at the top left of the board, it is engineered to handle AMD Ryzen 9000, Ryzen 8000, and Ryzen 7000 desktop processors with ease, including high-demand 3D V-Cache chips like the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D,an appealing foundation given AMD's plans to keep Socket AM5 alive well past 2029.
To squeeze maximum gaming throughput out of those chips, the BIOS includes Gigabyte's one-click X3D Turbo Mode alongside the AI-assisted D5 Bionic Corsa memory tuning engine. Four dual-channel DDR5 DIMM slots support both AMD EXPO and Intel XMP profiles at speeds reaching up to 8200 MT/s (OC).

The lower half of the board reinforces its enthusiast positioning within the B850 tier. The primary PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot is fortified with stainless-steel Ultra Durable PCIe Gen5 Armor to support heavy multi-slot GPUs and features a quick-release PCIe EZ-Latch Plus button. For storage, four M.2 slots are onboard: a primary PCIe 5.0 x4 slot under its own dedicated aluminum heatsink, plus three PCIe 4.0 x4 slots beneath the wide lower thermal guard stamped with the "# TEAM UP. FIGHT ON." motto, right beside the B850 chipset heatsink where a chibi Ari is pictured eating ramen.
Tool-less installation is standard across the board thanks to M.2 EZ-Latch Plus and M.2 EZ-Latch Click mechanisms, allowing builders to secure NVMe SSDs and heatsinks without tiny screws. Enthusiasts will also appreciate the dedicated EZ-Debug Zone in the upper-right corner complete with a two-digit 8.8. Debug LED readout, onboard control buttons, and a 20 Gbps front-panel USB-C header. Networking combines a fast 5GbE LAN port with a Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) and Bluetooth 5.4 module utilizing Gigabyte's single-block WIFI EZ-Plug antenna connector. Like its white counterpart introduced ahead of Computex 2026, the retail package includes a collectible ARI doll blind box figure, while official retail pricing remains to be announced.

My Test Bench
Looking closely at the board layout, this black edition of the B850 AORUS ELITE-P hits the exact sweet spot I look for in a modern AM5 build without paying the steep premium of an X870E flagship. Too often, anime-themed special editions merely slap a decorative sticker onto an entry-level PCB with cut-down power delivery. Here, Gigabyte built around a genuinely capable enthusiast foundation: a 16+2+2 phase digital VRM, full PCIe 5.0 bandwidth for both the primary GPU and main NVMe drive, 5GbE LAN, Wi-Fi 7, and most notably a physical two-digit POST code display (8.8.),a troubleshooting lifesaver when dialing in tight DDR5 memory timings that is rarely included on midrange B850 boards.
Shifting to a matte black finish also makes the board far easier to color-match than the all-white ICE model, especially when pairing it with dark graphics cards or a high-performance dual-tower air cooler built for Ryzen X3D processors. Should the teams at Gigabyte and AORUS wish to send a B850 AORUS ELITE-P unit over to our hardware lab, we would gladly put it through its paces on our AM5 test bench to measure VRM thermal stability, screwless PCIe 5.0 M.2 heatsink efficiency, and real-world DDR5 overclocking headroom.
