Sony's Biggest Launch Since Helldivers 2 and PS5 Sales Up 43%: How Marvel's Wolverine Dominated the US Charts in September

Logan unleashing his adamantium claws in Marvel's Wolverine on PS5, the best-selling game of September 2026 according to Circana

Just a day after topping the North American PS5 PlayStation Store download charts for September 2026, Marvel's Wolverine has officially claimed the crown across the entire US video game market. According to the latest monthly industry report published by Circana executive director and analyst Mat Piscatella (covering the four-week tracking period from August 30 to October 3, 2026), Insomniac Games' brutal solo action title debuted as the best-selling video game of September 2026 in the United States across combined physical and digital dollar sales.

Sony's Biggest Launch-Month Dollar Sales Since Helldivers 2

Released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026, Marvel's Wolverine achieved the highest launch-month full-game dollar sales for any title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment since Helldivers 2 debuted in February 2024. The context makes the achievement even more striking: whereas Arrowhead's co-op shooter launched simultaneously on PS5 and PC at a lower $39.99 price point, Logan's standalone adventure reached this revenue milestone as a single-platform PS5 exclusive priced at $69.99.

With just over two weeks of availability on the shelves during Circana's September tracking window, Insomniac's blockbuster immediately vaulted to 11th place among the best-selling games of 2026 year-to-date in the US. In the monthly rankings, it beat out two multiplatform sports juggernauts that also launched in September: NBA 2K27 (No. 2) and EA Sports FC 27 (No. 3).

PS5 Hardware Revenue Surges 43% to Overtake Nintendo Switch 2

Logan's arrival delivered an immediate halo effect for Sony's hardware ecosystem. Coming off a summer where console sales hit their lowest point since 2013 amid hardware price hikes, total US video game hardware spending climbed 12% year-over-year in September 2026 to reach $362 million.

The PlayStation 5 led all hardware platforms in September in both unit sales and dollar revenue. Compared to September 2025, PS5 unit volume increased by 22% while hardware dollar sales surged by 43%, handing Sony its highest monthly hardware dollar share since May 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 finished second for the month with unit sales down 14% year-over-year, while Xbox Series X|S placed third following a 27% year-over-year drop in unit sales, marking an all-time low for Xbox hardware in a September period.

The momentum carried straight into the accessories market as well: with total US accessory spending rising 10% year-over-year to $218 million, the PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller Marvel's Wolverine Limited Edition ranked as the number one best-selling accessory of September in dollar sales. Overall US spending across hardware, content, and accessories totaled $4.76 billion for the month (-1% year-over-year), as strong gains in console content (+8%) and PC content (+27%) were offset by a 14% dip in mobile spending.

My Take

Watching a pure single-player, Mature-rated action game drive a 43% year-over-year surge in PS5 hardware revenue is a powerful reminder of what true flagship exclusives still accomplish. Even six years into the console's lifecycle, a $70 single-platform release from Insomniac Games managed to out-earn annualized multiplatform titans like NBA 2K27 and EA Sports FC 27 in its launch month while pulling both consoles and custom DualSense controllers off the shelves. When the craftsmanship and character appeal line up, prestige single-player blockbusters remain Sony's strongest hardware engine.
