With less than four weeks remaining before its worldwide launch on December 1, 2026, Hela: of Mice & Magic is pulling back the curtain on the narrative heart driving its miniature open world. Swedish developer Windup Games, founded in Umeå by the original creators behind the Unravel series led by creative director Martin Sahlin, and publisher Knights Peak released the first installment of their Stories of Hela video series on November 5. Alongside this story deep dive featured on the official PlayStation channel, the studio confirmed a major multiplayer milestone: full-adventure cross-play will be supported across all platforms on day one.

An Ailing Witch, Forgotten Letters, and a Land Out of Tune

While earlier showcases focused heavily on physics-driven traversal and outdoor hijinks, the new Stories of Hela featurette highlights the emotional thread tying every expedition together. Set across lush landscapes inspired by the boreal forests of northern Sweden, the story follows a kind-hearted old witch who has watched over the region and its inhabitants for centuries. When the land begins falling out of tune and the witch grows too ill to leave her cottage, she entrusts the journey to her smallest companions: her loyal mouse familiars.

In practice, the narrative unfolds through letters that continue to arrive at the witch's doorstep. Each message guides the mice toward neighboring homesteads, forest clearings, and winding creeks to lend a helping paw to local villagers and befriend woodland creatures. Yet the journey reaches beyond everyday errands. The video introduces enigmatic figures such as the Ritual Keeper, whose presence ties directly into the region's ancient magic and forgotten past. Whenever players return to the cottage, the witch shares stories of her own, weaving each small act of kindness into a larger tapestry where repeating the old melody is no longer enough to heal the land.

Full-Adventure 4-Player Cross-Play, Split-Screen, and the Shade System

Equally important for cooperative players is the confirmation of seamless cross-platform support. Windup Games and Knights Peak announced that up to four players will be able to experience the entire story campaign together across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC right at launch. Whether your group prefers classic split-screen multiplayer sessions on PS5 and Switch or online squads spread across different ecosystems, no one will be locked out of the party.

Frog-shaped magical backpacks allow the mice to glide, swing with a grappling tongue, and combine their strengths to solve physics puzzles.

The studio built its open world to accommodate every playstyle from the ground up:

  • 4-Player Online Co-op with Cross-Play: the complete narrative campaign and open-world exploration can be shared across consoles and PC.
  • 2-Player Local Split-Screen: couch co-op remains fully supported for two players on a single screen.
  • Solo Play via the Shade System: solo adventurers can conjure spectral echoes to assist with multi-character physics puzzles without needing an online partner.

December 1 Release Date, Xbox Game Pass, and Physical Harmony Edition

Equipped with their magical frog backpacks that double as gliders, grappling hooks, and foraging kits, the tiny heroes of Hela: of Mice & Magic begin their quest on December 1, 2026. The game launches digitally on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via the official Steam store page (where a playable demo is currently available) as well as the Epic Games Store.

Subscribers on Xbox Game Pass will also gain day-one access at launch, joining a strong season for wholesome cooperative adventures on Xbox and PC. For collectors, a limited physical Harmony Edition will hit retail shelves on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2.

My Perspective

From the moment I tried the playable demo, that unmistakable tactile charm from Unravel jumped right off the screen: the weight of a pine cone, the bounce of moss underfoot, and a ground-level camera that turns a quiet Swedish stream into a towering expedition. What excites me most about this Stories of Hela deep dive is seeing how Windup Games anchors all that playful frog-backpack physics into a genuine folklore tale. Having the ailing witch's cottage serve as a warm hub where letters and encounters with characters like the Ritual Keeper build into a broader mystery gives the open world real purpose. Locking in full four-player cross-play alongside local split-screen and day-one Xbox Game Pass availability is the final piece of the puzzle, making December 1 an easy date to circle for cozy co-op nights.
