68,733 Switch 2 Consoles Sold in a Week as Minecraft Debuts at No. 3: Japan's Weekly Famitsu Charts

Hardware momentum in Japan just shifted into high gear ahead of the holiday season. According to the official weekly retail estimates published by Famitsu for the period from October 26 to November 1, 2026, Nintendo Switch 2 sales more than tripled week-over-week to reach 68,733 units. Up from 21,792 units the previous week (+215.4%), the surge pushes the hybrid console's cumulative domestic total past 6,521,352 units in Japan alone.

Minecraft's Native Switch 2 Edition Lands Straight on the Podium

A major catalyst behind the hardware spike was the retail release of the native Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft, which moved 11,754 physical copies in its opening week to claim No. 3 overall on the software chart. For context, the original Nintendo Switch edition launched back in June 2018 is still charting in Japan's Top 30 with nearly 4.3 million boxed copies sold to date.

Built natively for Nintendo's new hardware, the Switch 2 release introduces the Vibrant Visuals graphical upgrade featuring enhanced lighting, water reflections, and dynamic shadows. It also bundles the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with crisper visuals and supports direct world transfers from the original Switch, making it an easy upgrade for Japanese households migrating their long-running worlds.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Holds No. 1 Over Final Fantasy Resonance

At the top of the software rankings, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort defended its crown for a second consecutive week with 23,466 physical copies sold, bringing its ten-day retail tally to 88,098 units. Featuring twelve motion-controlled sports playable by up to eight players online with the Joy-Con 2 controllers, Nintendo's evergreen family title continues to anchor retail demand ahead of the company's official 2026 and 2027 Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive release slate.

Meanwhile, Square Enix's Final Fantasy Resonance claimed three spots inside the Top 10 across platforms (No. 2 on Switch 2 with 14,462 units, No. 4 on PS5 with 11,181 units, and No. 6 on Switch with 8,425 units), lifting its combined physical total in Japan to 167,259 copies after two weeks on shelves. Debuting side by side at No. 7 and No. 8, the four-player party game Sanrio Party Land generated 13,617 combined first-week sales across its Switch 2 and original Switch editions.

Japanese Hardware Sales (October 26 to November 1, 2026)

On the hardware front, the Nintendo Switch 2 accounted for nearly three-quarters of all consoles sold in Japan during the tracking week, offering a welcome domestic rebound after global Q2 hardware shipments cooled following earlier component cost pressures. Sony's hardware footprint was carried almost entirely by the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition at 15,988 units, while the disc-equipped standard PS5 fell to just 89 units and the PS5 Pro recorded 149 units amid severe retail stock constraints.

My Perspective

Seeing Minecraft jump straight into Japan's Top 3 with a dedicated Switch 2 physical cartridge tells you everything about how families shop in the region. For millions of younger players in Japan, Mojang's sandbox is the default social hub, and plenty of parents were waiting for a native Switch 2 box with seamless world transfers and the Vibrant Visuals upgrade before retiring their 2017 Switch units. Combine that release with strong word-of-mouth for Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and a massive late-October hardware restock from Nintendo, and jumping from 21,792 to 68,733 consoles in a single week makes complete sense. On the flip side, seeing the standard disc-drive PS5 sell just 89 units nationwide while the Digital Edition moves nearly 16,000 units is a stark reminder of how aggressively Sony has pivoted its Japanese hardware allocation toward all-digital consoles.
