Hunter's Moon Launches Today on PS5: Why This Monster-Free Historical Folk Horror Hits So Close to the Bone

Hunter's Moon on PS5 historical folk horror game by Twin Swans

Just days before Halloween, while most studios lean heavily on supernatural monsters and loud jump scares, a far more insidious kind of dread has arrived today on the PlayStation Store. Launching this October 26, 2026 exclusively on PlayStation 5 for $19.99 (£14.99 / €17.99), Hunter's Moon is the debut title from independent studio Twin Swans. I was immediately drawn to its bold creative premise: there are no demons, ghosts, or spells lurking in the dark here. Instead, the terror hunting you until sunrise is entirely human, fueled by mass hysteria and religious paranoia in 17th-century rural England.

One Fateful Night to Outrun the Witchfinder General

The entire story of Hunter's Moon unfolds across a single night under the glow of the autumn full moon. Played from a tense first-person perspective, you step into the shoes of Lilith Thorne (voiced by Hannah Morley), a young woman and village healer falsely accused of witchcraft. Once night falls, survival becomes a desperate race against time: Lilith must slip through a fractured village on the brink of collapse, navigate the surrounding woods, and cross the misty moors before the gallows claim her life.

To ground this nocturnal escape in chilling historical reality, writer-director Alicia Contestabile drew direct inspiration from the real-life English witch trials spearheaded in 1644 by Matthew Hopkins. Styling himself the Witchfinder General and publishing his notorious 1647 manual The Discovery of Witches alongside colleague John Stearne, Hopkins sent more innocent people to the gallows than all previous English witch hunters combined. In the game, that relentless persecution takes shape through three pursuers stalking Lilith across the map: the Witchfinder General, the village magistrate, and a local huntsman.

Immersive-Theatre Eavesdropping and PS5 3D Audio

Founded by Alicia Contestabile following her work as producer on The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, Twin Swans brings together artists and developers whose past credits include The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Signalis, and The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope, paired with an evocative cello score composed by Resina. That storytelling pedigree shines through in the game's core gameplay loop, which borrows directly from immersive theatre: clandestine eavesdropping.

In Hunter's Moon on PS5, every whispered conversation behind shuttered windows and every encounter in the dark can determine Lilith Thorne's survival.

Unarmed against her hunters, Lilith must rely on stealth, environmental awareness, and the secrets whispered behind closed doors. By creeping up to cottage windows and doorways, you can listen in on a cast of over 100 fully voice-acted characters brought to life by 48 voice actors. Leveraging the PS5 Tempest 3D AudioTech and DualSense haptic feedback, listening closely at a window allows you to overhear crucial warnings, sage counsel, family feuds, folk songs, or the location of sacred items, while crossing paths with eerie straw-clad mummers roaming the countryside.

My Perspective

Looking closely at what Hunter's Moon brings to the table, I am genuinely captivated by Twin Swans' artistic conviction. At a time of year when many of us are browsing through the best horror games to stream for Halloween, I find myself fascinated by a studio that strips away supernatural tropes to confront the real historical terror of human superstition. As Alicia Contestabile noted on the PlayStation Blog, what makes the 17th-century witch trials so haunting is that the accusers and hunters were ordinary neighbors who deeply believed witchcraft was real. Creeping beneath cottage windows immersed in spatial 3D audio, trying to figure out which villager might secretly help a hunted woman survive until dawn, is exactly the kind of atmospheric indie gem I want to play with the lights off tonight.
