35% Ahead of Breath of the Wild: Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Claims 2026's Biggest UK Physical Launch on Switch 2

Following its global release on November 5, 2026, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake has delivered a historic retail opening in the United Kingdom. According to physical sales tracking data from NielsenIQ (GfK Entertainment) shared this Sunday, November 8 by industry analyst Christopher Dring (The Game Business), Link's ground-up revival has officially claimed the title of biggest physical game launch of 2026 in the UK across all platforms.
In its opening days at retail, the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive comfortably outpaced the debut weeks of every annual blockbuster released so far this year in the UK, beating heavyweights from EA Sports FC, Call of Duty, and Resident Evil. Across the forty-year history of Eiji Aonuma and Shigeru Miyamoto's flagship series, the remake also stands as the second-biggest physical Zelda launch of all time on the UK charts.
35% Ahead of Breath of the Wild and Half of Tears of the Kingdom's Historic Peak
Breaking down the NielsenIQ retail figures, first-week boxed sales for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 finished 35% higher than what The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild achieved at launch in March 2017 across both the original Nintendo Switch and Wii U combined. That puts the remake behind only the massive May 2023 debut of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, reaching roughly half (50%) of its opening-week physical volume.
As Dring notes, hardware install base dynamics play a major role in both comparisons. When Tears of the Kingdom arrived in spring 2023, it launched into an established global base of more than 125 million Nintendo Switch consoles, whereas the Nintendo Switch 2 is still in the early stages of its lifecycle. Conversely, back in March 2017, severe day-one hardware shortages for the original Switch capped how many physical copies of Breath of the Wild could be sold during its launch window.
The Fastest-Selling Classic-Format Zelda Game Ever Recorded in the UK
Beyond comparisons with Nintendo's two open-air epics, the retail surge sets an all-time benchmark for the franchise's traditional structure. According to The Game Business report, the Switch 2 remake is easily the fastest-selling "old-school" Zelda adventure (built around classic dungeon progression and item-gated exploration) ever tracked in the UK, surpassing the original December 1998 Nintendo 64 release, the June 2011 Ocarina of Time 3D handheld remaster on Nintendo 3DS, as well as Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom.

Strong collector demand at physical retail was also fueled by Nintendo shipping the complete game on the Switch 2 cartridge (avoiding the controversial Game-Key Card format), paired with a special textured metallic slipcase across European and UK storefronts. This boxed retail triumph mirrors its digital momentum, where the game holds the top spot on the Switch 2 eShop charts while recently dethroning Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for Metacritic's highest user score of all time at 9.6/10.

My Perspective
Watching a ground-up remake of a 1998 Nintendo 64 classic beat EA Sports FC, Call of Duty, and Resident Evil at UK physical retail (historically the home turf of EA's football juggernaut and military shooters) proves just how much commercial pull Ocarina of Time still commands. While my criticisms regarding the FSR 1.0 upscaler and the missing Master Quest mode still stand, watching a traditional dungeon-driven Zelda dominate boxed charts in 2026 is genuinely refreshing. Nintendo now has hard commercial proof that players never outgrew classic temple design.
