Following Fan Backlash, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Reveals Its Redesigned Male Protagonist Voiced by Blythe Melin

When early testers call out a narrative RPG's lead character for feeling wooden, some studios stubbornly stick to their guns until launch day. Owlcat Games chose the opposite path. Following candid community criticism after early hands-on previews of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, the developer and publisher unveiled a complete visual redesign and voice recast for the game's male protagonist and his twin brother, now brought to life by actor Blythe Melin.
Blythe Melin Takes Over as the Male Captain and His Twin Brother J
When Owlcat Games first showcased its third-person sci-fi action RPG,currently in development for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the official The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Steam page, players praised the female captain's performance but widely criticized the male counterpart for a flat vocal delivery and uninspired default look. Staying true to the community-first mindset it demonstrated when deciding to delay Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader's final DLC to December for extra polish, the studio went back to the recording booth.
Stepping into the role is voice actor Blythe Melin, whose previous credits include Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Diablo IV, and the tactical shooter Ready or Not. In The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, Melin pulls double duty: he voices both the player-controlled Pinkwater Security mercenary captain and his identical twin brother, J, who serves as a more carefree, laid-back foil to the protagonist.

Ditching the Generic Military Cut for a Distinct Default Face
Alongside the newly recorded dialogue, Owlcat's character artists rebuilt the male captain's default 3D head model from the ground up. As shown in the studio's new comparison footage, the protagonist ditches his previous cookie-cutter military buzzcut in favor of fuller wavy hair, sharper facial structure, and noticeably richer micro-expressions during close-up conversations.
| Updated Element in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn | Original Preview Version | New Version Revealed by Owlcat Games |
|---|---|---|
| English Voice Acting (Male Captain & J) | Criticized by testers for lacking emotional weight and grit | Completely re-recorded by Blythe Melin (Diablo IV, Ready or Not) |
| Default 3D Character Model | Standard, generic military personnel appearance | Redesigned face with higher detail and distinct personality shared with twin J |
| Character Creator & Female Lead | Full customization suite and well-received female voiceover | Full character customization and the female protagonist's voice remain intact |
While players will still be able to customize their captain's appearance from scratch using the in-game character creator, Owlcat noted in its announcement that having a compelling, recognizable default face is vital for players who prefer jumping straight into the story,a staple of classic party-based sci-fi RPGs celebrated in our look at how veteran European studios carry on BioWare's RPG legacy. Additional cast announcements for the rest of the crew are slated to follow at a later date.

My Take
Watching Owlcat's new showcase for even thirty seconds makes it clear why this overhaul was worth the effort. Where the original male captain sounded like a background NPC reading off a teleprompter, Blythe Melin immediately injects warmth, grit, and a natural contrast between the battle-hardened mercenary and his easygoing twin brother J. In a cinematic sci-fi RPG built around tight camera angles and crew banter, swallowing your pride and recasting the lead before launch is the kind of call that saves a game's first impression.
