Originally greenlit in 2024 to celebrate three decades of genre-defining role-playing games in Edmonton, the upcoming feature documentary Massive Effect: The BioWare Story has unexpectedly evolved into the chronicle of a historic studio's final chapter. Written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Akash Sherman and co-produced by Fennessey Films and Score G Productions for Super Channel, the film is set to premiere in 2027 after capturing BioWare's final days and the fallout of its closure from the inside.

Two Years of Behind-the-Scenes Filming Leading Up to EA's Shutdown

When producers Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie began rolling cameras two years ago, the project was conceived as an origin-to-legacy portrait of the studio founded in 1995 in Alberta by three newly graduated medical doctors: Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. From Baldur's Gate to the Mass Effect trilogy, the documentary set out to examine how a modest Canadian team reshaped interactive storytelling worldwide.

Instead, industry reality dramatically altered the film's ending. Because production had already been underway for two years when Electronic Arts announced BioWare's permanent closure and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect last month, the documentary team was positioned to document the studio's conclusion in real time. The final act of Massive Effect: The BioWare Story will now cover the studio's last days, the layoff of 400 employees, and the global reaction from players mourning the loss of an RPG institution.

Commissioned by Edmonton-based broadcaster Super Channel, the feature is slated for a major international film festival run ahead of its world premiere in 2027. Kim Ball, Executive Vice President of Content and Communications at Super Channel, highlighted the local significance of the project: "As an Edmonton-based company, we are especially proud to celebrate BioWare's extraordinary hometown story and the people, creativity and groundbreaking storytelling behind some of the most beloved games of a generation."

From the Three Founding Doctors to Casey Hudson and John Riccitiello: The Full Lineup

Fully independent from Electronic Arts, Massive Effect: The BioWare Story carries the official endorsement of the studio's original leadership. On the documentary's official website, co-founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka shared a joint statement backing the production: "We're proud this film honours those who made it all possible. The best stories never really end."

Alongside Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip, director Akash Sherman has assembled an extensive roster of veterans from BioWare's golden era as well as key executives from across the wider gaming industry:

  • The Architects of Mass Effect and KOTOR: game director Casey Hudson, lead writer Drew Karpyshyn, former general manager Aaryn Flynn, creative director Mac Walters, iconic Commander Shepard voice actor Jennifer Hale, and voice-over director Caroline Livingstone.
  • Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age Veterans: Dragon Age creator and lead writer David Gaider, former executive producer Mark Darrah, lead designer James Ohlen (Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age: Origins), and Overhaul Games co-founder Trent Oster.
  • Industry Executives and Observers: former Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello (who oversaw EA's acquisition of BioWare in 2007), Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly, The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley, and Canadian broadcaster Victor Lucas (The Electric Playground).

Several prominent BioWare writers are not yet listed among the initial wave of confirmed interviewees, including Trick Weekes, Jennifer Hepler, Sheryl Chee, Mary Kirby, and Lukas Kristjanson, though it remains unclear whether additional contributors will appear in the final cut.

An Open Call for Fan Archives Ahead of the 2027 World Premiere

As House of Commons petition e-7898 calling on Ottawa to fund a BioWare buyback continues to gather signatures across Canada, the filmmakers are inviting the global community to contribute directly to the documentary. Through the official portal at massiveeffect.ca, Fennessey Films and Score G Productions have opened an archival submission drive for players.

Fans can submit fan art, cosplay photography, convention footage, personal memorabilia, or video recordings capturing their memories with BioWare's franchises over the past thirty years. As writer and director Akash Sherman noted in his statement on the project, beneath the blockbuster franchises and corporate shakeups, "at the end of the day, this is a story about people, from all walks of life, united by a shared goal to create."

My Take

There is something deeply bittersweet about watching a documentary that started filming two years ago as a celebration of BioWare's legacy turn into a real-time post-mortem of its demise. Yet having grown up on Baldur's Gate II, Knights of the Old Republic, and the original Mass Effect trilogy, I am infinitely grateful that Akash Sherman's cameras were already rolling inside that orbit rather than leaving history to be written by a sterile Electronic Arts restructuring memo.

What makes this interview lineup mandatory viewing is the contrast in perspectives: putting original co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk and master worldbuilders like Drew Karpyshyn and David Gaider in the same film as John Riccitiello, the executive who brought BioWare under the EA umbrella in 2007. BioWare's entire arc is encapsulated in that tension between an Edmonton studio built by three doctors obsessed with character-driven RPGs and a corporate machine chasing live-service trends, Frostbite engine mandates, and costly detours like Anthem. The studio doors may be closed, but in 2027, the people who actually built the Normandy and Thedas will finally get to tell their side of the story.
