Zero Upcoming Switch 1 Games and Six 2027 Exclusives: Inside Nintendo's Official Switch 2 Release Schedule

Alongside its financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027, Nintendo Co., Ltd. has published its updated launch schedule for primary first-party software from October 2026 onwards. Beyond reconfirming the release windows for six major Nintendo Switch 2 games slated for 2027, the official report marks a historic milestone: for the first time since March 2017, Nintendo lists zero upcoming titles in the pipeline for the original Nintendo Switch.

November and December 2026: Zelda, Pikmin 4, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Anchor the Holidays

Before kicking off its 2027 slate, the Kyoto publisher is locking down the final weeks of 2026 with a trio of flagship revamps tailored for its new hybrid hardware. Following the packaged release of Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on October 1 (after its July 30 digital debut) and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort on October 22, the holiday push officially begins today, November 5, 2026, with the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2.

Two upgraded Switch 2 Editions will immediately follow to carry the holiday lineup through December:

  • Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy: Launching on November 12, 2026, adding a dedicated new Dandori tactical curriculum.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: Scheduled for release on December 3, 2026.

As confirmed in the supplementary notes of Nintendo's financial report, players who already own the packaged or digital versions of Pikmin 4 or Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on the original Nintendo Switch will be able to purchase a standalone upgrade pack to unlock the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition without rebuying the full game.

From Metroid Ravenous on January 28 to Pokémon Winds & Waves: The 2027 Switch 2 Lineup

The full-scale generational shift accelerates in early 2027, shaping a stacked 2027 video game release calendar for Switch 2 owners. In its latest filing, Nintendo reconfirmed the exact launch dates and target windows for its six upcoming pillars:

  • Metroid Ravenous (January 28, 2027): Samus Aran returns in a brand-new 2D action-exploration adventure set to open Nintendo's 2027 calendar in late January.
  • Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - Definitive Edition (February 25, 2027): Licensed to be published and sold as a Nintendo product outside Japan, Koei Tecmo's prequel musou arrives on Switch 2 with the hardware headroom needed to iron out its massive battlefield frame rates.
  • Kirby and the World Beyond (Spring 2027): Building on the 3D blueprint of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, HAL Laboratory's pink hero steps into a full open-world adventure between March and June 2027.
  • Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves (2027): Game Freak and The Pokémon Company's next mainline dual release, centered around an open island archipelago and underwater exploration, remains firmly on track for 2027.
  • Xenoblade Genesis (2027): Monolith Soft's brand-new fantasy RPG, designed as a fresh starting point for the acclaimed series, also retains its 2027 release window.

Complementing Nintendo's internal roster is the third-party Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods, which was recently adjusted from late 2026 to a Q1 2027 launch window, further packing the first three months of the year alongside Samus Aran's return.

End of an Era: Zero Future Switch 1 Games Listed on Nintendo's Schedule

Perhaps the most telling detail on page 17 of the financial explanatory material sits in the box reserved for original Nintendo Switch software. Under the schedule for October 2026 onwards, the only entries listed are two free-to-start downloadable apps that already launched on October 5, 2026: Hello, Luigi! and Hello, Peach!. Beyond those two October releases, the column for upcoming first-party Switch 1 games is completely blank.

This decisive pivot reflects Nintendo's broader financial strategy. Even as the company navigates a 41% summer dip in hardware shipments tied to surging memory costs, Nintendo is forecasting 60 million Nintendo Switch 2 software units sold (excluding hardware bundles) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, up 23.2% year-over-year. Conversely, original Switch software sales are projected to decline by 23.3% to 105 million units, officially cementing the Nintendo Switch 2 as the sole home for Kyoto's upcoming blockbusters.

My Perspective

Finding the upcoming Nintendo Switch 1 software column completely empty in an official quarterly earnings report feels like the end of an era after nine and a half unforgettable years, yet it is the best news Switch 2 owners could ask for. By finally cutting the cross-generation cord and freeing its internal teams from designing around a 2017 mobile chip, Nintendo can let its studios build exclusively for the new hardware. Opening 2027 on January 28 with a sharp new 2D entry in Metroid Ravenous, rolling straight into an open-world Kirby and the World Beyond in the spring, and anchoring the back half of the year with Xenoblade Genesis and Pokémon Winds & Waves is the exact kind of relentless software cadence needed to justify the console's higher price tag. And frankly, if Monolith Soft pulls off launching Xenoblade Genesis in 2027 right after delivering all of its Switch 2 Edition upgrades, Nintendo ought to build them a statue outside Kyoto headquarters.
