“Examine the Facts”: Pressed on Relying Too Much on GTA 6, Take-Two CEO Lists 15 Multi-Million Franchises

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick at WSJ Tech Live

Speaking on stage at the WSJ Tech Live: California conference in Napa Valley on November 4, 2026, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick hardly expected to spend the final stretch before Grand Theft Auto VI defending the depth of his company's back catalog. Yet within the very first minute of a 23-minute live interview, Wall Street Journal deputy media editor Jessica Toonkel asked whether the publisher was worried about not having “enough big hits” in its library outside of Rockstar Games' upcoming juggernaut.

An Awkward Opening Minute on the Wall Street Journal Stage

The conversation got off to an uneasy start almost immediately. When Toonkel remarked in her opening setup that GTA 6 was coming out in “days,” Zelnick dryly corrected the timeline without missing a beat: “Well, two weeks, but who's counting?” Moments later, pointing out that Take-Two's share price was trading more than 20% below its all-time high despite the massive anticipation surrounding the return to Vice City, the interviewer posed a question that drew audible murmurs and laughter from the audience in the room.

“Is there a concern? I think there is a concern that this is your big hit, and that you don't have enough hits in your library. How do you knock that down?”

After pulling a visibly incredulous expression that quickly circulated across social media, the newly re-elected Take-Two chief executive pushed back head-on. Rather than entertaining the premise that his company is a one-trick pony, Zelnick delivered a blunt three-word rebuttal before rattling off the publisher's balance sheet: “Examine the facts.”

15 Franchises With Over 5 Million Sales Each: Zelnick's Catalog Roll Call

To dismantle the suggestion that Take-Two lacks breadth beyond Vice City, Zelnick highlighted a metric few entertainment companies on Earth can match: Take-Two wholly owns 15 distinct franchises that have each sold at least 5 million units in an individual release. In his view, that lineup represents the strongest collection of owned intellectual property in the entire video game business, a reality directly reflected in the company's revenue, profitability, and market capitalization.

“Well, look... We have 15 franchises that have each sold at least five million units in an individual release. I think we have the best collection of owned intellectual property in the video game business, and I think that's reflected in our top line, our bottom line, and our market cap. So, I guess the way I would respond is... Examine the facts?”

Backing up his statement with a rapid-fire roll call across Rockstar Games, 2K, and Zynga, Zelnick went down the list. Beyond the Grand Theft Auto series (which has surpassed 475 million total sales, anchored by over 230 million copies of GTA V and the ongoing juggernaut of GTA Online), he pointed to Red Dead Redemption, noting over 65 million units off the cuff on stage for its recent entry (with Take-Two's official investor filings placing Red Dead Redemption 2 past 87 million copies sold and the wider franchise over 116 million units), alongside Red Dead Online.

Shifting to the 2K publishing label, Zelnick reminded the room that NBA 2K stands as the biggest sports title in North America and the second-biggest worldwide, before naming WWE 2K, BioShock, Civilization, and the Borderlands franchise that recently crossed 100 million lifetime sales following the launch of its fourth mainline entry. He rounded out the inventory with Take-Two's mobile portfolio under Zynga, citing Words With Friends, Empires & Puzzles, and Zynga Poker alongside hundreds of other live titles.

GTA 6 Development Budget and Pre-Order Momentum Ahead of Earnings

The rest of the session scarcely eased the tension on stage. When Toonkel flatly asked how much Grand Theft Auto VI cost to develop, Zelnick kept Rockstar's budget locked down, acknowledging only that the project was “expensive” and took a long time because Take-Two's mandate is to build the finest entertainment on Earth rather than debate short-term stock swings. He also navigated an awkward question regarding Netflix's struggles in the gaming space, despite Take-Two maintaining an active partnership with the streaming giant.

The exchange comes just days ahead of Take-Two Interactive's Q2 Fiscal 2027 earnings report scheduled for November 9, 2026. While Zelnick has previously described early consumer demand for Rockstar's next crime epic as “unprecedented” and “astronomical” without disclosing internal unit counts, independent market tracking already points to 7.71 million pre-orders and over $750 million in pre-launch revenue for GTA 6 across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ahead of pre-loading. Driven by the November 19 release, Take-Two continues to project record full-year net bookings between $8 billion and $8.2 billion for fiscal 2027.

My Take

Watching a mainstream financial journalist look the CEO of Rockstar Games and 2K in the eye and ask whether his company lacks “enough hits” feels like a sketch comedy bit. When your corporate roof covers Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K, Borderlands, Civilization, and BioShock, being framed as a publisher with a thin bench is either a glaring failure of interview prep or rage-bait dressed up as market analysis. Zelnick's baffled facial expression and his dry “examine the facts” response summed up what every single gamer watching that clip was thinking.

At the same time, while the phrasing of the question was absurd, the underlying Wall Street anxiety isn't hard to decode. Yes, Take-Two owns 15 multi-million-selling franchises that almost any rival publisher would kill for, but the financial gravity of GTA 6 has grown so immense that it warps the entire valuation of the company around a single release date. Two weeks out from November 19, investors aren't nervous because Take-Two lacks other hits; they are nervous because no entertainment product on the planet carries stakes as massive as Leonida.
