120 FPS and GameShare Co-Op: Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana Launches Natively on Switch 2 on February 25, 2027

Eight years after first washing ashore on Nintendo's original hybrid console, Nihon Falcom's flagship action RPG is getting a dedicated next-generation overhaul. Publisher NIS America has officially announced that a native Nintendo Switch 2 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA will launch in the West on February 25, 2027.
Rather than relying on basic backward compatibility, this new release is built specifically to leverage Nintendo's upgraded hardware. Players can expect frame rates reaching up to 120 FPS alongside built-in two-player cooperative play powered by the console's GameShare feature.
A 120 FPS Leap That Transforms Combat on the Isle of Seiren
Anyone who explored the untamed cliffs of the cursed Isle of Seiren on the original Switch back in June 2018 remembers the technical compromises required at the time. Locked at 30 frames per second with aggressive dynamic resolution scaling in handheld mode, that port struggled to keep pace with Nihon Falcom's lightning-fast party combat.
Pushing the frame rate ceiling up to 120 FPS on Nintendo Switch 2 fundamentally changes how the game feels in motion. In an action RPG where survival depends on split-second Flash Move dodges and pixel-perfect Flash Guard parries, quadrupling the frame rate cuts input latency dramatically.
Swapping on the fly between swordsman Adol Christin, rapier specialist Laxia, and heavy hitter Sahad feels noticeably sharper, even when ancient primordials fill the screen with particle effects. At a time when players are closely comparing how publishers handle Nintendo Switch 2 upgrades, NIS America is pitching this release around high-refresh-rate responsiveness and new multiplayer features.
GameShare Co-Op Brings Two-Player Exploration to Console
The biggest surprise in the announcement is native support for GameShare co-op. Using the Nintendo Switch 2's built-in sharing functionality, a second player can jump into the session to control another party member during both island exploration and boss encounters.
Until now, cooperative play in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA had remained an experimental feature tucked away in the Steam PC port, absent from the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and original Switch editions. Bringing two-player action natively to Switch 2 via GameShare makes chaining elemental skills and defending Castaway Village with a partner effortless.

Expanded Localization and a February 2027 Launch Window
Story-wise, the Switch 2 edition preserves the acclaimed dual-protagonist narrative that made the eighth mainline entry a fan favorite. Shipwrecked aboard the passenger liner Lombardia, Adol Christin works to rescue fellow castaways while experiencing prophetic dreams of Dana Iclucia, a blue-haired maiden fighting to save the ancient kingdom of Eternia.
NIS America also confirmed that the Switch 2 version adds full Spanish text localization for the very first time alongside English and French text, paired with dual English and Japanese voice acting. The release adds another major JRPG milestone to the early 2027 video game release calendar.
My Perspective
Across Nihon Falcom's entire modern catalog, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA holds a special place thanks to its sweeping sense of adventure and the bittersweet elegance of Dana's storyline. Back in 2018, being able to carry Seiren Island in handheld mode on the original Switch was wonderful, yet the blurry dynamic resolution and 30 FPS cap always held back a combat system engineered for pure speed.
Seeing this classic return natively at 120 FPS with GameShare co-op built right in feels like the technical redemption the portable version always deserved. Assuming pricing stays reasonable when February 25, 2027 arrives, the Switch 2 edition is shaping up to be the most rewarding way to experience or share one of the finest action RPGs of the last decade.
