Weiß Schwarz Online Launches March 24, 2027 on Switch 2, Switch, and Steam: Dual Editions, 8 Anime Franchises, and Game-Key Cards

To celebrate the 18th anniversary of its flagship crossover trading card game, Bushiroad (alongside co-developers FURYU Corporation and LANCARSE Ltd.) has officially announced a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Weiß Schwarz Online, joining the previously planned Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam) releases. The digital card battler is set to launch globally on Steam on March 24, 2027 (and on March 25, 2027 at Japanese retail for consoles), featuring day-one language support for English, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.
A Pokémon-Style Split: 8 Franchises Divided Between Weiß Edition and Schwarz Edition
Rather than following a free-to-play gacha structure, Bushiroad is splitting the base game into two distinct launch versions. Priced at 7,678 yen (roughly $50) each in Japan across both physical and digital storefronts, the Weiß Edition and Schwarz Edition each come pre-loaded with four major anime, light novel, and VTuber franchises:
- Weiß Edition (4 Included Series): The Quintessential Quintuplets, the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko crossover light novel imprint, BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!, and the VTuber group Aogiri High School.
- Schwarz Edition (4 Included Series): Sword Art Online (SAO), Touhou Project, THE IDOLM@STER Shiny Colors, and BanG Dream! Ave Mujica.
Players who pick up the Weiß Edition can still match up freely against Schwarz Edition owners in online multiplayer. Furthermore, Bushiroad confirmed that the four franchises from the opposite version, as well as post-launch expansion sets, will be sold separately as paid downloadable content (DLC) so players can expand their card pool without swapping versions.

Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Cards and the 17,380-Yen Complete Edition
For physical collectors eyeing the Japanese retail release, there is a key hardware detail to keep in mind: on Nintendo Switch 2, all physical boxed copies of the Weiß, Schwarz, and Complete editions will ship on Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Cards, requiring an internet connection to download the game data onto the system.
While the Switch 2 cartridge itself acts as an activation key, Bushiroad is packing the physical boxes with real-world trading cards for tabletop collectors:
- Standard Weiß and Schwarz Editions (7,678 yen): Each retail copy includes 4 exclusive promotional (PR) cards matching the four series in that edition, plus an early pre-order bonus pack containing 2 additional PR cards.
- Complete Edition (17,380 yen, approx. $114): Available exclusively during the first-print production run, this bundle unlocks all 8 launch franchises out of the box and includes a massive set of 16 physical promotional cards (8 standard-design PR cards alongside 8 foil parallel-design versions).
Tenkou Academy Story Mode, WSP Currency, and Online Ranked Battles
Beyond competitive deckbuilding, Weiß Schwarz Online features a dedicated single-player Story Mode. Players step into the shoes of Hinata Amamiya, a second-year high school transfer student arriving at Tenkou Academy. Operating under the school philosophy that conflict helps students grow stronger, every campus dispute at Tenkou is settled through a game of Weiß Schwarz. Guided by a mysterious girl named Ruu, Hinata is given one month to choose between the academy's two rival factions: the order-driven White Squad and the freedom-loving Black Squad.
Unlike mobile card battlers such as the upcoming Digimon Alysion, card acquisition in Weiß Schwarz Online revolves around in-game WSP (Weiss Schwarz Points). Every match completed in Story Mode, three-tier single-player CPU Fight, or online multiplayer (spanning casual Free Fight, competitive Ranked Fight, and private ID-based Room Fight lobbies) rewards players with WSP. Those points can be spent directly at the in-game shop to unlock booster packs, trial decks, and board accessories, backed by an interactive step-by-step tutorial for newcomers.
My Perspective
Honestly, being able to rip open Sword Art Online, Touhou Project, or BanG Dream! booster packs simply by grinding matches for in-game WSP, without hitting stamina walls or predatory premium gem pop-ups every five minutes, is the exact breath of fresh air console and PC card game fans have been begging for. Still, Bushiroad couldn't resist sneaking in its signature collector tax: splitting the base game into two 7,678-yen boxes with only four franchises apiece like a classic Pokémon release, while shipping the Switch 2 version on a download-required Game-Key Card, takes some serious nerve. Then again, let's be real: between the secondary market value of The Quintessential Quintuplets promos and the eight foil parallel cards tucked inside the 17,380-yen Complete Edition, hardcore tabletop players are going to wipe out Japanese pre-orders before they even boot up the game.
