No apEX, mezii Calling, and a 2-0 Sweep Over NAVI: jL Explains Why Team Vitality Is the Best CS2 Team in the World

Losing a veteran captain right before a $1.25 million LAN tournament is usually enough to derail any title contender in Counter-Strike 2. Yet as Team Vitality punched their ticket to the playoffs at PGL Masters Bucharest 2026 where Vitality entered the event with jL as a stand-in, the roster delivered a statement 2-0 sweep over Natus Vincere. Brought in to cover for Dan "apEX" Madesclaire during his paternity leave, Lithuanian rifler Justinas "jL" Lekavicius pulled back the curtain on how the world's top-ranked squad absorbs major lineup shifts without missing a beat.
A 2-0 Masterclass Over NAVI (13-2, 13-9) With mezii Calling the Shots
The Round 4 Swiss Stage clash carried plenty of emotional and tactical weight. Facing Natus Vincere for the first time since winning the Copenhagen Major under their banner, Justinas "jL" Lekavicius went head-to-head against his former teammates (Aleksib, b1t, iM, w0nderful, and makazze) with a direct playoff berth on the line. Following clean 2-0 victories over 9z and The MongolZ and a narrow 1-2 setback against FUT Esports, Vitality left nothing to chance in Bucharest.
From the opening pistol round on NAVI's map pick of Inferno, Vitality completely suffocated their opponents, locking down a 10-2 CT half before closing the map 13-2. The second map, Dust2, showcased even greater poise from Rémy "XTQZZZ" Quoniam's squad. After falling behind 9-3 at halftime against a sharp NAVI defense, Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut, Robin "ropz" Kool, Shahar "flameZ" Shushan, jL, and William "mezii" Merriman strung together ten unanswered CT rounds (10-0) after the side switch to seal a 13-9 comeback.
Even more remarkably, William "mezii" Merriman, despite taking over interim in-game leader (IGL) duties in apEX's absence, dominated the server from start to finish and topped the scoreboard with a staggering 1.58 series rating.

Why jL Believes Team Vitality's Collective Depth Stands Alone
Speaking in Bucharest after locking in the 3-1 Swiss record, Justinas "jL" Lekavicius was candid about the tactical adjustments required when playing without a career caller like Dan "apEX" Madesclaire. Rather than pretending the setup remained identical, the Lithuanian star pointed to the roster's shared communication load as the exact reason Vitality sits atop the global rankings:
"mezii doesn't set it up as good as Dan, but this is normal, mezii's not an in-game leader. This is why Vitality is the best team in the world, they have the ability to cover for players. They have the ability to communicate more, to organize things and that's what we're doing so well right now."
Having previously stood in for Vitality at BLAST Open Porto during mezii's own paternity leave, jL had to slot into a very different set of roles this time around to fill apEX's shoes. Instead of leaving mezii on an island as a makeshift captain, veterans like ropz, ZywOo, and flameZ actively share mid-round calling and map control responsibilities so every player can still fire at full power.
Beating Old Friends as the Bucharest Playoff Bracket Takes Shape
Beyond the tactical takeaways, sweeping his former organization in straight maps carried an undeniable personal edge for jL. On a day where MOUZ and Aurora also clinched their PGL Masters Bucharest 2026 playoff spots, the stand-in admitted he expected a much steeper uphill battle against his old squad:
"To be honest, I thought it was going to be a little bit tougher. I came into the game with just the mindset that I'm going to have fun, I'm going to do my best, I'm going to try to help my teammates the most, and we'll see where it takes us. Does it feel a little bit more fun to beat friends? Yes. Yes."
My Take: The True Measure of a Counter-Strike Dynasty
We have watched plenty of star-studded lineups fall apart the second their primary tactician steps away from the server for a single event. What Team Vitality is pulling off in Bucharest says far more about their championship DNA than winning a trophy at full strength ever could. Handing the playbook to mezii, bringing in jL for his second stand-in stint in different positions, and still dismantling NAVI 13-2 on Inferno before rattling off ten straight CT rounds on Dust2 is absurdly impressive. When your temporary caller drops a 1.58 rating because ZywOo, ropz, and flameZ seamlessly pick up the vocal slack, you are looking at a team built to weather anything.
