Smalland 2: Lost Realms Overview Trailer Reveals 10-Player Co-Op, Creature Mounts, and Folklore Realms for PS5, Xbox, and PC

Smalland 2: Lost Realms Overview Trailer gameplay PS5 Xbox Series X|S PC

The Smallfolk are heading back into the undergrowth. Maximum Entertainment has released the official Overview Trailer for Smalland 2: Lost Realms across the official Xbox and PlayStation channels. Built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, this open-world survival adventure leaves behind the remnants of human civilization to plunge players into a primeval, mythical era set long before the events of Smalland: Survive the Wilds. Coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store (with a Nintendo Switch 2 version also in development), the new showcase breaks down the sequel's overhauled traversal, settlement building, and 10-player cooperative survival.

A Prequel Rooted in European Folklore Long Before the Era of Giants

Despite the number in its title, Smalland 2: Lost Realms serves as a full prequel set ages before Giants ever walked or colonized the land. Instead of scavenging around rusted tin cans or discarded backyard toys, players are dropped into an ancient wilderness inspired by European folklore and myth. This untamed landscape is ruled by creatures bound to the earth itself, including Pookas, will-o'-the-wisps, and other mythical entities.

You step into the boots of a Smallfolk Vanguard dispatched far beyond the safety of home into uncharted territory. The narrative kicks off with an ominous prophecy from The Great Owl, who has foreseen a catastrophic event threatening to devastate the realms. Stopping that disaster requires forging alliances with local inhabitants, unlocking their arcane secrets, and mastering new technologies across the wilds.

Beyond a Single Map: Distinct Lost Realms and Trade Routes

One of the biggest structural changes highlighted in the overview trailer is how the world itself is organized. Rather than confining the adventure to a single continuous map like its predecessor, Smalland 2: Lost Realms sends players across multiple distinct realms. Each land features its own ecosystem, environmental hazards, unique folklore creatures, and indigenous cultures with their own resources to trade and unlock.

This multi-realm structure directly expands how base building works. Alongside foraging plants and harvesting raw minerals to craft durable armor sets and weapons, players can now construct outposts across different territories and establish active trade routes linking those lands together. Connecting your settlements ensures refined supplies flow between regions as you push deeper into hostile territory.

Free Climbing, Water Currents, Creature Mounts, and Custom Perks

On the gameplay front, the jump to Unreal Engine 5 comes paired with a complete overhaul of movement and character progression. The trailer spotlights four core systems designed to make survival feel far more dynamic:

  • Climbing and Water Current Traversal: Players can now directly scale tree trunks, massive roots, and rocky cliffs while managing their stamina gauge to uncover hidden paths. Water ceases to be an instant barrier: you can swim across the surface and ride water currents for faster travel alongside gliding through the canopy.
  • Taming and Riding Creatures: Wild beasts scattered across the primeval landscape can be won over and recruited into a party of nature-attuned companions. Once tamed, these creatures help carry heavy loads, fight alongside you using unique abilities, and serve as mounts to cover ground rapidly.
  • Flexible Perk System: A dedicated Perk tree lets you tailor your Vanguard to match your preferred role, whether you want to specialize in frontline combat, rugged survival, arcane magic, or companion mastery.
  • Up to 10-Player Co-Op: Whether you brave the wilds solo or bring a full squad, the game supports up to 10-player online co-op, joining the wave of cooperative and multiplayer titles heading to PS5 and Steam. Friends can pool gathered materials, build sprawling tree-top encampments together, and coordinate against towering bosses.

Release Window and Storefront Wishlists on Console and PC

While Maximum Entertainment initially pointed toward a 2026 window for PC and current-gen consoles alongside a 2027 target for Nintendo's next system, PlayStation's official overview trailer description now lists Smalland 2: Lost Realms as launching on PS5 in 2027, lining up with its planned arrival alongside survival and sandbox heavyweights already expanding on Nintendo Switch 2. While players wait for a firm calendar date, official store pages are live now to wishlist the game on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Xbox Store.

My Perspective

I sank dozens of hours into the original Smalland, and while its vertical tree-top base building had real charm, it always lived slightly in the shadow of Grounded when it came to traversal fluidity and world identity. Turning this second entry into an ancient prequel stripped of human clutter and leaning hard into European folklore, Pookas, and arcane magic is the smartest creative pivot Maximum Entertainment could have made. Controller in hand, having proper stamina-based climbing, swimming currents, and inter-realm trade routes fixes almost every friction point I had with the first game. If Unreal Engine 5 holds a rock-solid frame rate when ten players are riding beetles and slinging magic at the same time, this prequel has everything it needs to carve out its own throne in the miniature survival genre.
