Pokémon Apps Are Finally Back Online After Emergency PHP Security Maintenance

Pokémon Sleep and Pokémon HOME back online after emergency security maintenance

The digital lockouts are finally lifting for millions of Trainers worldwide. After Wednesday's sudden blackout saw Pokémon HOME, Pokémon Champions, and Pokémon Sleep taken offline in an emergency, The Pokémon Company and its development partners have finished deploying server-side security patches. As of Thursday morning on October 22, 2026, all three core applications are back online across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, iOS, and Android.

Staggered Server Recovery Following Critical PHP Patches

The unannounced downtime began on October 21 following global cybersecurity alerts surrounding two severe remote code execution vulnerabilities discovered in the PHP programming language (tracked as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619). Because PHP powers a vast portion of web authentication and backend server infrastructure, The Pokémon Company suspended online operations without an initial end time to isolate its databases and apply urgent security updates.

With those defensive patches now verified, online functionality returned in three distinct waves:

  • Pokémon Champions: The competitive battle platform was the first service to recover, reopening its servers around 3:00 AM BST (2:00 AM UTC) on October 22 and restoring access to online lobbies and ranked matchmaking.
  • Pokémon HOME: The cloud storage hub co-developed with ILCA followed shortly afterward. Trainers can once again access their cloud boxes, use the Global Trade System (GTS), and transfer Pokémon between compatible console releases.
  • Pokémon Sleep: The mobile sleep-tracking app experienced the longest outage, remaining offline until approximately 10:00 AM BST (9:00 AM UTC) before resuming normal operations.

Pokémon Sleep Rolls Directly Into Version 3.9.0 with Compensation Under Review

The extended wait for Pokémon Sleep players was caused by a schedule overlap: Wednesday's emergency security maintenance bled directly into a pre-planned maintenance window for Version 3.9.0, overseen by developer Select Button.

Now live across mobile storefronts and detailed on the official Pokémon Sleep portal, Version 3.9.0 introduces several key adjustments and seasonal preparations:

  • Upcoming Autumn Events: Full backend support for the Halloween 2026: Double Candy Research event, alongside Meal Prep Week Vol. 1 and Bountiful Banquet Week Vol. 1.
  • November Content Additions: Groundwork for a new ingredient (Snackable Nuts), three new dishes, and an expanded Sleep Style Dex goal of 570 styles set to unlock on November 15, 2026.
  • Helper and Mythical Adjustments: Gengar's ingredient-finding probability has been buffed. In addition, Mythical Pokémon appearances during monthly events have been restructured, pairing Darkrai with New Moon Day #19 while moving Mew to Good Sleep Day #40.

For players whose overnight sleep tracking or research sessions were disrupted during the unexpected outage, relief appears to be on the way. According to official notices posted alongside The Pokémon Company's customer support portal, the development team apologized for the sudden interruption and confirmed that in-game compensation is currently being considered. Specific item distributions and claim windows will be announced directly via the in-game notice board once server stability has been fully monitored.

My Perspective

Opening up Pokémon HOME this morning to see all of my boxes safe and accounted for was an immediate relief. When you have living Pokédex collections and partner Pokémon that have traveled with you since the Game Boy Advance era, any headline involving remote code execution vulnerabilities is enough to make your stomach drop. I would much rather see The Pokémon Company pull the plug for twelve hours as a strict precaution than gamble with player cloud data. Missing a night of sleep tracking right before the Halloween Double Candy event in Pokémon Sleep is undeniably frustrating for daily players, though Select Button has a solid track record of sending out generous Poké Biscuit and incense care packages whenever unscheduled maintenance hits.
