Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted Is Free to Play on Nintendo Switch Online: Dates, HD Modes, and How to Download Until November 3

Nintendo has unlocked the full version of Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted at no extra cost for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 as part of its latest Game Trials event. Running from October 28 through November 3, 2026, the limited-time promotion lets members download and play the entire HD remaster from PopCap Games and The Lost Pixels without paying its standard $19.99 / €19.99 eShop price.
Six Days of Full Access on Switch and Switch 2: How the October Game Trials Offer Works
Detailed by Nintendo in the October 2026 edition of its official Nintendo Switch Online Magazine, the latest Game Trials event gives subscribers unrestricted access to Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted between October 28 and November 3, 2026. Unlike a restricted demo that locks players out after a few opening stages, the Game Trials build is the complete retail release.
The promotion is open to all active Nintendo Switch Online members, whether they subscribe to the standard Individual or Family plan or hold a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Arriving right after Avenging Spirit and Mole Mania joined the Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy library, the trial works across the original Nintendo Switch hardware family (standard, Lite, and OLED models) as well as Nintendo Switch 2.
- Free Trial Window: October 28 to November 3, 2026.
- Required Membership: Any active Nintendo Switch Online tier (base membership or Expansion Pack).
- Download Size: 2.8 GB on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
- Active Regions: Currently live across European and Australian Nintendo eShop storefronts (while North American subscribers await potential parity on the US eShop).
- Save Data Carryover: Any progress earned during the trial week transfers automatically if you decide to buy the full digital game (priced at $19.99 / €19.99) once the event concludes on November 3.
To start the download on your console, open the Nintendo Switch Online app directly from the system HOME menu or visit the official Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted Nintendo eShop page and select the Game Trials download prompt.
Local Co-Op, Head-to-Head PvP, and Permadeath: Inside PopCap's HD Remaster
Originally launched on October 23, 2025 by publisher Electronic Arts alongside developers PopCap Games and The Lost Pixels, Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted rebuilds the beloved 2009 lane-based tower defense classic for modern displays. The remaster preserves the original artistic charm and Laura Shigihara's memorable soundtrack while upgrading the visuals to crisp 16:9 high definition, retaining handheld touch-screen support, and adding GameShare compatibility on the dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
Beyond its visual overhaul and toggleable cosmetic options unlocked through the Tree of Wisdom, this version expands Crazy Dave's backyard defense with several multiplayer and challenge modes built for hybrid play:
- Local Co-Op Mode: Team up with a second player on a single console or via local wireless to defend the lawn together, complete with cooperative butter-slinging mechanics to stun incoming waves.
- Local PvP Mode: A head-to-head local multiplayer showdown where one player commands the zombie horde directly against the defender's Peashooters and Sunflowers.
- Cloudy Day Mode: A brand-new tactical challenge mode where falling sunlight is severely restricted, forcing players to rethink their economy on every lane.
- Rest In Peace Mode: A hardcore permadeath variant for the Adventure campaign where a single fatal mistake sends your entire run back to square one.
- Classic Minigames and Art Library: Fan-favorite bonus stages like Wall-Nut Bowling return in HD alongside a digital gallery of pre-production concept sketches celebrating 15 years of franchise history.
Landing right alongside the busy October 29, 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch release lineup, this six-day trial is an easy pickup for strategy fans looking for a quick session in handheld or tabletop mode.
My Perspective
Let's be real: when Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted launched back in October 2025, its $19.99 price tag felt a little steep for a remaster that played it fairly safe with the 2009 blueprint. Put that exact same package into a six-day free Game Trial, however, and it becomes an absolute no-brainer. Because the core Adventure campaign takes roughly eight to ten hours to beat from start to finish, any dedicated subscriber can comfortably roll credits, test their nerves in Rest In Peace permadeath mode, and settle a few local PvP grudges on the couch before November 3 without spending a dime. At just 2.8 GB on the eShop, there is zero excuse to let the zombies take your lawn this weekend.
