Minecraft Launches on Nintendo Switch 2 With Patch 26.60: 28-Chunk Render Distance, Launch Trailer, and Upgrade Steps

The wait is officially over on the Nintendo eShop and at retail stores. Today, Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 9:00 AM PT (12:00 PM ET / 17:00 CET), Mojang Studios, Xbox Game Studios, and co-developer SkyBox Labs officially launched the native Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Minecraft, celebrating the release with a brand-new launch trailer and the global rollout of Bedrock Edition update 26.60. After eight years of relying on the legacy 2018 build running through backward compatibility, players can finally jump into a version engineered specifically for Nintendo's new hybrid hardware.
Up to 28-Chunk Render Distance, Default Vibrant Visuals, and an Upgraded Super Mario Mash-Up
As we outlined in our technical preview of the Minecraft Nintendo Switch 2 Edition 4K and 60 FPS specs, the native client weighs in at a compact 1.2 GB while targeting dynamic 4K at 60 FPS when docked and native 1080p at 60 FPS in handheld mode. Hands-on testing with today's final 26.60 release highlights a massive leap in draw distance: whereas the original Switch struggled with a tight 12-chunk ceiling, the Nintendo Switch 2 pushes past 16 chunks with shaders active and reaches up to 28 chunks when visual effects are toggled off for maximum horizon visibility.

Enabled right out of the box, Mojang's Vibrant Visuals graphics pipeline introduces directional lighting, real-time dynamic shadows, volumetric fog, and realistic water reflections across both standard survival worlds and supported Marketplace creations. In today's launch notes, Mojang clarifies one important hardware limitation: Vibrant Visuals automatically disables during local split-screen multiplayer and inside certain incompatible Marketplace worlds to keep frame rates locked. Meanwhile, the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, featuring 40 character skins and 15 musical tracks fully overhauled for Vibrant Visuals,is included with every Switch 2 edition, though players should head into the in-game Marketplace tab to claim the updated DLC download before starting a new Mushroom Kingdom world.
Free Digital Upgrade vs. Switch 1 Physical Cartridge: How to Claim Your Switch 2 Version
With the upgrade window now live on the Nintendo eShop, Mojang has detailed the exact steps for existing players depending on whether they own the original Switch version digitally or on a physical game card. The promotional upgrade period runs from October 27, 2026, at 9:00 AM PT through January 31, 2027, at 9:00 AM PT:
- Switch 1 Digital Owners: You can claim the digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 ($29.99 MSRP for new buyers) completely free of charge via the Nintendo eShop using the same Nintendo Account in all regions worldwide, except Japan (100 JPY), Taiwan (30 NTD), and Thailand (25 THB), where mandatory local statutory fees apply. Digital owners also qualify for discounted eShop upgrade pricing toward the Deluxe Collection ($39.99, including 700 Minecoins and three add-ons) or the Ultimate Collection ($49.99, featuring 1,000 Minecoins and five add-ons).
- Switch 1 Physical Cartridge Owners: At a time when Nintendo Switch 2 physical cartridge policies remain a hot topic for collectors, the original Switch retail cartridge does not grant a free 1:1 digital Standard Edition swap. However, when you insert and launch your original Switch cartridge on a Nintendo Switch 2 system before January 31, 2027, an in-game notification prompt appears with a direct link to purchase the digital Ultimate Collection for Switch 2 at a promotional discount.
- World Migration and Minecoins: Existing Switch 1 local worlds carry over smoothly via the system migration tool, Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves, or Minecraft Realms, while your Marketplace library and Minecoin balance remain unified across the Nintendo ecosystem alongside a separate list of 133 Xbox Achievements (2,980 Gamerscore).
Bedrock Update 26.60: Over 600 Bug Fixes and Experimental Ice Caves
Launching alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 edition, Bedrock update 26.60 rolls out across all platforms with more than 600 bug fixes, including 89 community-reported issues. Notable repairs fix a critical bug where placing a Bundle inside a Double Chest could cause items to vanish (MCPE-188043), resolve unresponsive villager trading menus when opening the inventory simultaneously (MCPE-138181), stop full-grown horses from squeezing through single-block corridors (MCPE-238139), and rename several Explorer Maps for clarity (such as the Ocean Monument Map and Buried Trial Chambers Map).
Players who enable the experimental toggle for 2026's fourth Game Drop in their world settings can also test the new underground Ice Caves biome starting today. Generated deep beneath freezing Overworld regions, these icy caverns feature walls of Packed Ice and Calcite, massive floor-to-ceiling icicles, and new cold-weather hazards.
My Perspective
I downloaded update 26.60 on my Switch 2 the moment the eShop upgrade went live this morning, and the generational leap over the 2018 version is honestly night and day! Being able to cruise past 16 chunks with Vibrant Visuals casting golden volumetric fog across the water,or flipping shaders off to see a massive 28-chunk horizon at a locked 60 FPS in handheld mode, makes exploring old worlds feel brand new. Just remember one handy tip once you boot up: pop into the in-game Marketplace tab right away to claim the updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack download so you can see Peach's Castle and the giant Mario statue lit up with the new shaders.
