Metal Slug and a Japan Exclusive: 3 GBA Classics Land on Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo delivered an unexpected boost to its classic gaming lineup on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service can dive straight into three celebrated titles from the legendary Game Boy Advance library starting today. This autumn update brings together the run-and-gun combat of Metal Slug Advance, the creature-raising simulation of Monster Rancher Advance, and a long-awaited Western debut with Kururin Paradise.
This eclectic release adds fresh variety to the hybrid platform's retro offering, a console ecosystem whose biggest updates we regularly track in our game release calendar. Rather than routine catalog filler, this wave delivers three distinct gameplay experiences that take full advantage of the platform's suspend points and portable play features.
Metal Slug, Monster Rancher, and Japan Exclusive Kururin Paradise Join the Ranks
Headlining the drop is Metal Slug Advance, originally published by SNK in 2004. Unlike arcade entries where a single hit means instant defeat, this custom handheld adaptation introduced a dedicated life gauge for recruits Walter Ryan and Tyra Elson, alongside an addictive collectible system featuring 100 tactical survival cards scattered across enemy territory.
Alongside it arrives Monster Rancher Advance (Tecmo, 2001), which brilliantly adapted the series' monster-generating mechanics to portable silicon. Without a CD-ROM drive to read physical music discs like its PlayStation predecessors, the game lets players create and customize monsters through typed text incantations, raising them for high-stakes arena tournaments.
The standout surprise of this drop, however, is Kururin Paradise. Developed by Eighting and released by Nintendo in 2002, this precision puzzle-action gem never previously received an official Western release. Players can finally maneuver the rotating Helirin baton through intricate, narrow mazes, complete with colorful minigames and refined mechanics that never made it outside Japan until now.

My Take: A Well-Curated GBA Delivery for Dedicated Retro Enthusiasts
Metal Slug is one of my all-time favorite franchises: I spent entire days glued to arcade cabinets back in the day, and I still play it on a regular basis today! Having this Advance entry on the Nintendo Switch is an absolute treat. Its tailored handheld structure, featuring a dedicated life gauge and a collection quest of 100 survival cards, makes it a blast to revisit on the Switch OLED screen. Furthermore, seeing Nintendo officially unearth a hidden gem like Kururin Paradise without needing fan translation patches brings genuine value to the retro catalog. A compact, highly satisfying update for 32-bit portable nostalgics.
