Phoenix Cyclops Joins Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls as Update 1.004 Overhauls 4v4 Assists on PS5 and PC

Three months after its August launch, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls officially kicks off its post-launch roadmap today, November 2, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and PC. Developed by Arc System Works in collaboration with PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games, the 4v4 tag-team fighter welcomes its first downloadable roster addition, Phoenix Cyclops, alongside the massive Update 1.004 (Version 1.004.002) patch that reins in Assist spam, rebalances team gauges, and introduces dedicated online performance filters.
Phoenix Cyclops Enters the Arena: Pricing, Editions, and New Costumes
Directly inspired by his Phoenix Five incarnation from the Avengers vs. X-Men comic run, this cosmic-powered version of Scott Summers (voiced in English by Ray Chase) blends his signature concussive Optic Blasts with the fiery pyrokinesis of the Phoenix Force. While mutant fans are also keeping a close eye on the multiple playable mutants in development for PS5's upcoming Marvel's X-Men, Arc System Works delivers an explosive, high-execution take on the iconic field leader built specifically for competitive tag combat.
Phoenix Cyclops is available today at no extra cost for owners of the Year 1 Character and Stage Pass ($34.99), as well as players who purchased the Digital Deluxe Edition or Ultimate Edition. Those playing on the standard edition ($59.99 / €69.99 on PS5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store) can purchase him as a standalone DLC character for $7.99 (£6.49 / €7.99).
Alongside the character release, two standalone cosmetic packs have launched today for $4.99 each: the Phoenix Cyclops Classic Costume Pack, which outfits Scott in his iconic blue and yellow X-Men uniform, and the Hulk Joe Fixit Costume Pack. The update also adds Cyclops's signature battle track "Fallen Phoenix", a dedicated Phoenix Cyclops Arena Course in All-Star Arena, a new Support Soul for Survival, a Fighter Soul for Arcadia Rumble, and fresh lobby avatars.

Solar Shards, Dark Phoenix Install, and Phoenix Shift: How His Kit Works
Designed by Arc System Works as an explosive all-rounder, Phoenix Cyclops revolves around a high-stakes resource mechanic called Solar Shards. Every time Scott lands specific attacks, most notably his bread-and-butter Optic Blast (which can be fired on the ground or in the air, charged for bonus damage, and bounced off the floor while low-profiling incoming projectiles), he builds up cosmic shards.
Managing these resources requires strict tactical discipline, as his transformation into Dark Phoenix can only be triggered once per round:
- Dark Phoenix State and Health Drain: Once your Solar Shards are assembled, activating the Dark Phoenix install supercharges Cyclops's attributes and flame specials (including Surging Flame, Heat Wave, Tactical Strike, and Phoenix Dive), balanced by a slight health cost on select empowered moves.
- Multi-Directional Phoenix Shift: While in the Dark Phoenix state, Scott unlocks Phoenix Shift, a specialized multi-directional dash that can be woven during or immediately after normal and special moves. By canceling recovery frames on the fly, it opens up oppressive high-low mix-ups, command grab resets, and extended combo routes.
- Transition to the Ashen State: Once the Dark Phoenix timer expires, Cyclops enters an Ashen State for the remainder of the round, retaining his core normals and beams but losing his cosmic buffs and the ability to gather new shards.
- Dynamic Ultimate Skill (Dark Ascension): His cinematic Ultimate changes properties based on his current state. Activating it with all Solar Shards collected triggers a full cinematic transformation into Dark Phoenix with maximum damage and duration; using it without shards delivers a heavy strike that safely transitions him into the Ashen State; firing it while already in Dark Phoenix cashes out the install for massive, round-ending damage.

Update 1.004 Balance Changes: Longer Assist Cooldowns and 4v4 System Tweaks
Beyond the new challenger, Update 1.004 (1.004.002) directly addresses the biggest complaint from competitive players since launch: visual clutter and relentless tag pressure. While fans of team-based Marvel action have been enjoying the tag-team combos showcased in Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Arc System Works' 4v4 arena needed systemic adjustments to restore neutral play legibility.
The official patch notes confirm several sweeping combat changes across PS5 and PC:
- Increased Assist Cooldowns Across the Roster: Recovery times between partner calls have been lengthened across the board, reducing the frequency of screen-filling assists and forcing players to rely on clean neutral spacing.
- Assemble Gauge Adjustments: Recovery rates for the Assemble Gauge have been re-tuned to curb constant character switching during blockstrings.
- Defensive and Tag Mechanic Refinements: Rules governing Crossover Reflect, Perfect Reflect, and Member Switch have been adjusted to improve match flow, accompanied by boosted input responsiveness during hectic four-character sequences.
- Hitbox and Training Fixes: Resolved numerous character-specific collision quirks, alongside bug fixes in Training Mode and individual Character Lessons.
PS5 Online Stability, Cross-Play Fixes, and New PC Benchmark Filter
On the technical front, Update 1.004 introduces quality-of-life upgrades for online play and recalibrates the requirements for reaching Master rank in Ranked Matches. Both PS5 and PC versions now feature an in-match slowdown icon that alerts players whenever connection drops or hardware frame-pacing issues occur on either side. The patch also eliminates spectator desynchronization bugs and freezes within Open Lobbies and Room Matches.
For PC players specifically, mandatory Shader Warmup now runs upon launching the game post-patch to prevent mid-combo stuttering. Furthermore, Arc System Works has integrated a built-in PC Benchmark Test tool: players who pass the hardware verification can toggle a matchmaking filter to queue exclusively against opponents who have also passed the benchmark, ensuring smoother cross-play sessions across PC and PlayStation 5.
My Perspective
Plugging in my arcade stick for Update 1.004, the blanket increase to Assist cooldowns is easily the healthiest change Arc System Works could have made. Since August, high-level Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls matches often devolved into chaotic visual fireworks where you spent half the round blocking three consecutive partner summons. Slowing down Assemble Gauge recovery and sharpening Perfect Reflect interactions finally brings footsies and deliberate neutral reads back to the forefront.
As for Phoenix Cyclops, his Solar Shards mechanic is an absolute blast if you love high-execution install characters. Canceling recovery frames with Phoenix Shift gives him that unmistakable, lightning-fast ArcSys rushdown feel, though his one-shot install rule demands real discipline. Blowing your Dark Phoenix state too early and getting stuck in the Ashen State against a full four-character team will get you punished immediately.
