Jumanji: Open World on PlayStation and PS5: Avatars Stuck in Demo Mode, Real-World Chaos, and the Truth Behind the December 25 Trailer

Jumanji Open World official trailer PlayStation Sony Pictures

When a video titled Jumanji: Open World drop on the official PlayStation channel with a #playstation tag immediately sent thousands of players into speculation mode. Was Sony quietly shadow-dropping a full-scale open-world console adaptation to follow up on previous licensed titles? In reality, the new trailer showcases the final theatrical installment in Sony Pictures' modern trilogy, directed by Jake Kasdan and scheduled to hit movie theaters on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026. Still, there is a very good reason why Sony's gaming division is championing this trailer: the entire premise is built around a hilarious parody of video game mechanics.

A Broken Console Turns the Real World Into a Literal Open World

Since Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and The Next Level (2019), the modern franchise traded its cursed wooden board game for a vintage video game console capable of pulling four teenagers straight into a digital jungle governed by life bars, skill trees, and unskippable cutscenes. With Jumanji: Open World, the formula flips completely under the trailer's tagline: "Our world. New rules. One final game."

Instead of sucking Spencer (Alex Wolff), Bethany (Madison Iseman), Martha (Morgan Turner), and Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain) inside the screen, the shattered console spills its game code directly into our reality right in the middle of the holiday season. Everyday snowy streets suddenly transform into a massive open-world map overrun by giant ostriches, rampaging hippos, mandrills, and jungle hazards, forcing the real-world cast to survive by action-adventure gaming rules.

Smolder Bravestone and the Party Glitch Out in "Demo Mode" Like Broken NPCs

The smartest gaming gag in the footage revolves around a concept every player knows firsthand: "Demo Mode." Materializing in the real world without human players holding the controllers to pilot them, the four iconic video game avatars behave like store kiosk demos or unguided non-player characters stuck in default scripting loops.

That leaves Dr. Xander "Smolder" Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon (Jack Black), Franklin "Mouse" Finbar (Kevin Hart), and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) wandering through town locked into repetitive idle animations, heroic poses, and canned voice lines. At a time when studios are pushing technical boundaries to give GTA 6 NPCs real personalities with 600,000 animations, watching Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black spoof old-school pathfinding glitches and stiff dialogue trees in a suburban neighborhood is comedy gold. The ensemble also brings back Danny DeVito (Eddie), Awkwafina (Ming), Nick Jonas (Seaplane McDonough), fan-favorite NPC guide Nigel (Rhys Darby), and Bebe Neuwirth reprising her classic 1995 role as Nora Shepherd.

Is a New Jumanji Video Game Coming to PS5, Switch 2, and PC?

While the Jumanji: Open World title and its placement on the official PlayStation channel stem from corporate synergy between Sony Interactive Entertainment and sister studio Sony Pictures, no new console or PC game bearing the Open World name has been announced alongside the December 2026 theatrical release.

On the actual gaming front, the franchise license has most recently been handled by family publisher Outright Games and developer Cradle Games, the team behind Jumanji: Wild Adventures (which followed Jumanji: The Video Game across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC). If you are looking for four-player co-op jungle brawler action while browsing our upcoming game release calendar, those existing console adaptations remain the only playable entries controller in hand.

My Perspective

I have to admit I clicked on the PlayStation notification fully expecting to see a surprise co-op open-world game running on PS5. Once the initial confusion cleared up, though, the "Demo Mode" hook completely won me over. Leaning into the exact gaming tropes we all recognize (characters repeating their attract-mode catchphrases waiting for someone to press Start, awkward idle stances, and the sheer absurdity of a muscle-bound jungle avatar trying to navigate a regular winter street) gives this finale a genuinely clever angle. Even if we are not getting a big-budget open-world game out of it, watching Jack Black and Dwayne Johnson act like glitched-out kiosk NPCs is more than enough to sell me on the joke.
