God of War Laufey Delayed Out of February: Santa Monica Studio Moves PS5 Launch to May 20, 2027

PlayStation's first major first-party blockbuster of the new year is officially moving to late spring. Santa Monica Studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that God of War Laufey has been delayed from its previously scheduled February 16, 2027 launch. PlayStation 5 players will now have to wait just over three additional months, with the new worldwide release date locked in for May 20, 2027.

Santa Monica Studio's Official Statement: Why God of War Laufey Is Moving to May 2027

Just weeks after opening pre-orders in late September and detailing the game's retail and collector editions, Santa Monica Studio shared an official update across its social channels explaining why the team needed an extra quarter of development time before shipping.

In its full message to the PlayStation community, the studio wrote: "Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we've been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye's journey through the Everywhen. We don't take for granted the trust placed in the studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans. With this in mind, we've made the decision to delay God of War Laufey's release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential. On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we'll be back to share more updates soon!"

The fourteen-week extension gives engineers and combat designers breathing room to fine-tune encounter pacing, aerial juggling responsiveness, and visual modes across both base PS5 and PS5 Pro hardware.

Beyond the Leviathan Axe: Faye's Sword, the Serpent Bow, and the Everywhen on PS5

For the first time in a mainline entry for the franchise, God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight away from Kratos. Players step into the boots of Faye (known throughout the Nine Realms as Laufey the Just), the Jötunheim warrior, wife to Kratos, and mother to Atreus whose funeral opens the 2018 Norse reboot.

While series lore established that Faye originally wielded the iconic Leviathan Axe before passing it down to Kratos and Atreus prior to her death, God of War Laufey picks up immediately after her funeral pyre. Awakening unexpectedly in the Everywhen, a mystical afterlife where ruthless deities from across mythology clash for supremacy, Faye discovers that the safeguards she left behind to protect her husband and son are in jeopardy.

With the Leviathan Axe left behind in Midgard, Faye relies on a faster, highly acrobatic combat kit built around her runic blade and the living Serpent Bow. As detailed in our full breakdown of God of War Laufey's Serpent Bow mechanics and PS5 editions, the weapon uses the DualSense controller's adaptive triggers to switch seamlessly between hip-fire volleys and five-arrow precision sniping, while her runic cube companion Phranque and enchanted ribbon Rue launch enemies skyward against the forces of Begtse.

How the Delay Reshapes PlayStation Studios' First Half of 2027

Sliding from mid-February to late May significantly alters the opening stretch of the 2027 video game release calendar. By moving Faye's standalone adventure to Thursday, May 20, 2027, Sony Interactive Entertainment vacates a crowded winter window and positions its tentpole PS5 exclusive in a late-spring slot that has historically delivered massive sales momentum for PlayStation Studios.

Existing PlayStation Store digital pre-orders, retail reservations, and PlayStation Direct orders for the $149.99 Collector Box remain valid without any action required from buyers. Shipping estimates and early-access unlocks for the Last Wish Armor Set pre-order bonus have automatically shifted to May 20, 2027.

My Perspective

I will always take a three-month delay over a rushed February build with frame pacing hiccups during aerial combos in the Everywhen, though the timing of Santa Monica Studio's announcement is undeniably eyebrow-raising. Opening PS5 pre-orders at the end of September and rolling out a $149.99 game-less Collector Box in mid-October while stamping February 16 on every trailer, only to push the project to May 20 less than five weeks later, proves how tight that winter target really was behind closed doors. Still, handing the spotlight to Faye with a faster, dual-mode Serpent Bow combat loop is the boldest creative swing this franchise has taken since 2018. If fourteen extra weeks of polish ensure a razor-sharp launch on PS5 and PS5 Pro in May, the wait will be well worth it.
