140 Spore-Style Mutations and Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls: Everything Is Crab Set for Switch 2 and Consoles

Evolutionary biology has long had a running joke among scientists: given enough time and convergent evolution, nature eventually tries to turn everything into a crab. Known officially as carcinization, that exact scientific phenomenon serves as the premise for Everything Is Crab: The Animal Evolution Roguelite, developed by indie studio Odd Dreams Digital and published by Secret Mode. Following its well-received PC debut via Steam back in May, this clever blend of Spore creature-building and modern action roguelites is officially expanding to mobile devices and consoles, headlined by a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

Release Dates, Free Next-Gen Upgrade, and Joy-Con 2 Mouse Support

After standing out among the indie lineups highlighted around the Nintendo Indie World October 2026 showcase, the studio has locked in a two-stage rollout for its cross-platform expansion. Mobile players on iOS and Android will be first in line when the portable version drops on November 24, 2026. Console and additional computer storefronts will follow on January 26, 2027, bringing the game to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, the Mac App Store, and the Microsoft Store on PC.

On Nintendo's latest hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition goes beyond higher resolutions and smoother framerates. Odd Dreams Digital has built in native support for Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, giving console players desktop-grade precision when weaving through predators or managing rapid genetic adaptations mid-run. Secret Mode also confirmed that players who purchase the original Nintendo Switch version will receive a free upgrade to the optimized Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Priced at an approachable $9.99 / £6.99 / €9.99 on PC (alongside an optional Ghost Crab-themed Supporter Pack), the console versions maintain the same budget-friendly indie positioning.

Darwin Versus Carcinization: Over 140 Evolutions Across Four Living Biomes

Every run begins with you in control of Darwin, a tiny, amorphous blue blob with zero natural defenses and boundless genetic potential. Your mission is to hunt, scavenge, flee, or befriend other creatures across the food chain while actively resisting nature's pull toward crabhood by forging your own bizarre evolutionary path.

Having expanded from 125 abilities at its initial PC launch to more than 140 evolutions and specializations, the game lets you graft claws, wings, tentacles, extra legs, fur, scales, compound eyes, and toxic glands onto your body. Every mutation dynamically alters both your creature's visual model and its mechanical playstyle on the fly.

  • A living, reactive ecosystem: rival critters are not mere cannon fodder; they follow their own survival routines, migrate across territories, and progress through multiple evolutionary stages alongside you.
  • Four distinct biomes: each region enforces its own environmental rules, flora, fauna, points of interest, and dynamic weather events, complemented by specialized challenge scenarios such as Ice Age or Always Night.
  • Randomized bosses and Endless Mode: different bosses may appear on each run, a comprehensive Codex tracks your discoveries and meta-progression, and veteran survivors can unlock Endless runs to ditch the timer and outlast the apocalypse.

Landing in late January, Secret Mode's roguelite adds an inventive, highly replayable indie contender to the early 2027 video game release calendar across all major platforms.

My Take

Ever since the cell and creature stages of Spore, I have had a soft spot for games that let you stitch together absurd biological chimeras and immediately watch them come alive on screen. What makes Everything Is Crab work so well in practice is that beneath the lighthearted carcinization joke lies a genuinely smart roguelite synergy system where every limb or gland you graft carries real tactical weight against shifting weather and evolving predators. Adding native Joy-Con 2 mouse support for the Switch 2 release is a particularly thoughtful touch: for a fast-paced survival game born on PC, being able to switch effortlessly between handheld thumbsticks and tabletop mouse precision makes managing hectic late-game runs feel right at home.
