State of Decay 3: 19 Minutes of Lethal Zone Gameplay Showcase the New Dynamic Plague Nests

State of Decay 3 Lethal Zone gameplay Plague Nest assault

Following the launch of the State of Decay 3 closed beta on PC via Steam on October 13 for selected community members registered through Undead Labs' official portal, raw footage from the test build has finally surfaced. While most playtesters remain under a strict non-disclosure agreement, dedicated franchise creator Brian Menard, who recently sat down with Undead Labs Executive Producer Patrick for a three-hour developer session, has released an uninterrupted 19-minute and 33-second gameplay video. Free of commentary or webcam overlays, the footage drops straight into the sequel's most punishing setting: Lethal Zone.

From Static Plague Hearts to Dynamic Plague Nests: A Major Evolution

The centerpiece of this 19-minute showcase is the complete overhaul of the franchise's core infestation loop. Gone are the purely static Plague Hearts from State of Decay 2 that veteran survivors could easily cheese from a distance with pipe bombs or heavy-caliber rifles. Built in Unreal Engine 5, State of Decay 3 introduces Plague Nests, transforming high-level infestations into multi-layered, dungeon-like strongholds.

Close-quarters melee stamina management and crowd control leave zero margin for error on Lethal Zone difficulty.

Rather than sitting idle on the map, each Plague Nest operates under distinct behavioral profiles known internally as personas. If left unchecked across the largest map in franchise history, certain nests actively expand their territory, corrupting nearby outposts and escalating regional freak activity, while others grow deadlier the longer they mature. Clearing one requires breaching interconnected interior rooms and destroying multiple internal nodes while fending off relentless swarms.

Exploding Plague Blisters, Ammunition Scarcity, and Permadeath Stakes

Tackling a Plague Nest on Lethal Zone highlights just how tightly resource scarcity and survival economies are interwoven in the sequel. High-grade ammunition and medical supplies are severely restricted, and your home base's food and water reserves directly cap your survivor's maximum health and stamina pools. Because brute-forcing an infestation with explosives is rarely viable, the gameplay demonstrates how players must weaponize the environment itself using volatile Plague Blisters.

Lining the corrupted walls of the nest, these exploding pustules release clouds of toxic plague gas when ruptured. Triggering a blister at the right second can wipe out a dense pack of standard zombies or stagger fast-moving freaks like Ferals and enraged Juggernauts. However, in tight hallways, an accidental detonation can instantly trap your character, skyrocket blood plague infection levels, and trigger irreversible permadeath for a key community member.

An Early Beta Glimpse Ahead of the 2027 Launch

As Undead Labs notes in the disclaimer preceding the video, every frame shown comes from an early work-in-progress beta build. Melee animations, user interface elements, lighting, and reworked weapon ballistics will continue to evolve across upcoming PC playtest waves hosted via playtest.stateofdecay.com. Still, seeing nearly twenty minutes of unedited systems in motion provides a reassuring look at the project's trajectory shortly after Undead Labs' recent transition back to an independent studio.

Despite the studio's structural independence, Xbox Game Studios remains the publisher for the title. While an exact launch day has yet to be locked in, State of Decay 3 is slated to arrive on our 2027 video game release calendar for PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, alongside day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

My Take

After years of cinematic trailers and radio silence that made many of us wonder how far along the project actually was, watching nineteen minutes of raw, unedited gameplay is a massive relief. Replacing static Plague Hearts with multi-room Plague Nests fixes my biggest gripe with late-game State of Decay 2, where clearing infestations eventually felt like a repetitive chore of tossing explosives through a window. On Lethal Zone, the combination of tight corridor sightlines, volatile Plague Blisters, and stamina-draining melee combat creates genuine survival tension. As long as Undead Labs uses this beta feedback to tighten up combat hit reactions and co-op stability before 2027, I think this sequel is finally on the right track.
