Nearly a year after its high-profile debut on the Minecraft Marketplace in November 2025, the official Minecraft x Dragon Ball Z DLC is getting a major second wind. Developed by Cyclone in partnership with Mojang Studios and Toei Animation, the free 1.1 "Legends Update" rolls out today with four fan-favorite playable fighters, four new Story Mode battles, and a dedicated Custom Tournament mode supporting up to eight players.

Available at no extra cost for everyone who owns the base expansion (priced at 1,510 Minecoins on the in-game storefront), version 1.1 significantly expands both the Buu saga roster and the multiplayer experience across Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.

Vegito, Gotenks, Teen Gohan, and Bardock Join the Fight

When the crossover first launched as detailed on the official Minecraft.net portal, it featured eleven core combatants from Akira Toriyama's universe: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Trunks, Krillin, Android 17, Android 18, Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu. The 1.1 Legends Update bolsters that lineup with four powerhouse additions:

  • Vegito: The Potara earring fusion of Goku and Vegeta, armed with his signature spirit blade and devastating Final Kamehameha.
  • Gotenks: The unpredictable Metamoran fusion of Goten and Trunks, sporting his Super Saiyan 3 form and Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack.
  • Teen Gohan: The iconic Cell Games era fighter in his Demon Clan gi, built for high-speed Super Saiyan 2 combos.
  • Bardock: Goku's father in classic Saiyan battle armor, bringing relentless close-range brawling and energy blasts.

Staying true to the progression loop crafted by Cyclone, none of these four warriors are simply handed out in a menu. Players must step into the arena, challenge them head-on, and defeat them in combat to unlock each fighter and their custom move set.

4 New Story Mode Fights, 11 Character Variants, and Ki Charge Mechanics

Alongside the four headline fighters, the 1.1 patch introduces 11 unlockable alternate versions of the original cast. These variants let players equip distinct outfits and transformation states from across the anime, usable both inside the DLC's combat arenas and in standard survival worlds through the included skin pack.

The solo and co-op campaign also grows with 4 new Story Mode fights accompanied by fresh battle arenas. On the mechanical side, Cyclone has added a dedicated Ki Charge ability, allowing warriors to actively channel their energy during combat to fill their ultimate meter faster before unleashing a Kamehameha, Galick Gun, or Final Flash.

While this arena brawler structure offers a very different pace from the open-ended action showcased in Minecraft Dungeons II's reinvented gameplay, it turns the blocky sandbox into a remarkably responsive 3D fighting game.

8-Player Custom Tournaments Arrive Just Ahead of the Switch 2 Launch

For multiplayer groups, the standout addition is the new Custom Tournament mode. Building on the existing solo, co-op, and 5v5 free-for-all brawls, this mode lets up to 8 players set up their own bracket-style World Martial Arts Tournaments inspired by the classic Tenkaichi Budokai.

The timing of the update is no coincidence: version 1.1 lands just days before the sandbox hits Nintendo's new hybrid system, where Minecraft's 4K 60 FPS free Switch 2 upgrade recently opened pre-orders. Existing DLC owners on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices can download the 1.1 Legends Update for free right now through the Minecraft Marketplace.

My Perspective: Post-Launch Support That Goes Far Beyond a Skin Pack

Having watched dozens of licensed crossovers hit the Minecraft Marketplace over the years, I have seen far too many tie-ins stop at overpriced cosmetic skins that never receive a single content patch. Seeing Cyclone return nearly twelve months after launch to deliver Vegito, Gotenks, Bardock, four new story battles, and a full eight-player tournament bracket at zero additional cost sets a much higher bar.

Transforming Bedrock Edition into a fast-paced 3D arena fighter with custom Ki management and beam clashes is already an impressive technical feat. Dropping this 1.1 update right as players prepare to jump into the enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 edition makes it the perfect excuse to gather seven friends and settle a blocky Cell Games bracket of your own.
