Under 100 Grams and Rechargeable Battery: Xbox Reveals $49 Pocket-Sized Nano Controller

Microsoft and its Xbox division have officially unveiled the Xbox Nano Controller, the smallest official gamepad ever designed under the Xbox banner. Priced at $49.99 with pre-orders live today, this ultra-compact peripheral is scheduled for worldwide release on November 4, 2026. The hardware aims to deliver an uncompromised console control layout within a genuinely pocket-sized form factor.
Full Eighteen-Button Layout in a Pocket-Sized Body
Measuring just over 5 inches in length and weighing in at only 3.5 ounces, approximately 99 grams, the Xbox Nano Controller is lighter and more compact than most modern smartphones. Rather than stripping down essential inputs like many mobile mini-pads, Microsoft packed 18 standard controls onto the device, including dual clickable analog thumbsticks, a hybrid directional D-pad, four ABXY action buttons, and full shoulder bumpers and triggers (LB, LT, RB, RT).
The compact chassis also houses standard Xbox system navigation buttons alongside a dedicated programmable action button designed for custom shortcuts and quick captures. In a mobile landscape where third-party accessories like the CRKD Atom+ have pushed ultra-portable form factors, Microsoft delivers an authentic first-party alternative tuned specifically for its ecosystem.

USB-C Rechargeable Battery and Low-Latency Xbox Wireless
The controller introduces a significant departure from standard Xbox gamepad traditions. Moving away from the long-standing AA battery compartment, the Xbox Nano Controller incorporates an internal rechargeable battery powered via USB-C. Wireless connectivity is split between low-latency proprietary Xbox Wireless for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, alongside standard Bluetooth for seamless pairing with iPhones, iPads, Android devices, and Smart TVs running Xbox Cloud Gaming.
My Take
After more than two decades defined by beefy controllers dating back to the massive 2001 original "Duke", seeing Microsoft launch a true first-party pocket controller is a welcome surprise. Packing an internal battery, a complete 18-input layout with zero compromises, and proprietary Xbox Wireless to cut down latency makes this the ideal companion for daily commutes or Cloud Gaming sessions on the go.
