Help, My Kid Wants to Become a Pro Esports Gamer! A Parent's Guide

Indeed, our dear kids who once traded Pokemon cards have evolved into absolute wizards behind a keyboard or controller. Mouse-clicking prodigies. When you press your ear against their bedroom door, you hear them chanting strange jargon from another universe.
Buzzwords like 360-no-scope, GG, Rush B, or DPS roll off their tongues.
Then comes the pivotal moment. On a stormy afternoon, slamming the door because you obviously know nothing about life from the vantage point of your 40s, they drop the bombshell:
"I want to be a pro gamer and build a career in esports!"

What Is a Pro Gamer?
A pro gamer, or professional player, is someone who does not simply play video games. Contrary to popular belief, a pro gamer is working during the exact activity we mere mortals call gaming. That nuance is critical, and I emphasize it because it changes everything.
If you play purely for fun and lack the discipline to train intensely for weeks leading up to a tournament or LAN event (where players gather to compete head to head), then you are not a professional.
It really is that simple.
A pro gamer adheres to a structured lifestyle with 7 to 8 hours of daily deliberate practice in the West, while in South Korea, bootcamp schedules often demand 12 to 14 hours every single day. Check out my deep dive on a pro gamer's daily training schedule.
I am talking about genuine, rigorous training. You are not there to goof around. The ultimate objective is to win, dominate the meta, and earn a sustainable living.
What Is Esports?
Esports, or competitive electronic gaming, is officially recognized alongside traditional sports. And yes, fellow parents, esports is a legitimate competitive discipline, just like basketball, soccer, or chess.
Esports competitions generally fall into several main formats:
- Team vs. Team
- 1 vs. 1 Solo Battles
- Player vs. Machine (Speedrunning / AI challenges)
It is vital to recognize that competitive gaming has matured globally, with top-tier athletes commanding six-figure salaries, tournament prize pools in the millions, and mainstream broadcast coverage.
Governments and legal bodies worldwide have even established dedicated contractual frameworks and athletic visas for professional esports competitors.
Let Us Put Things in Perspective
Our children are not growing up, and will not live, in the world of our youth!
All the life experience we have acquired can certainly benefit and guide them, and we owe it to them to share our wisdom. However, they will navigate an economy with entirely different codes and digital frontiers.
In short, the world moves forward... 🙂
I am not saying we should not teach them the fundamental values that matter to us. We simply should not assume that every rigid blueprint from our past is mandatory for their future.

Why Do Our Kids Dream of Becoming Pro Gamers?
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pro basketball player. Michael Jordan was my idol, and I dreamed of playing in the NBA.
I played for years starting at age 10. I gave both my ankles and my left knee to the court.
I played on the school playground with crutches, with casts on my knees and ankles; I was a fanatic willing to sacrifice everything to make it pro. My former teachers and classmates still remember it.
I ended my run in semi-pro play when my joints simply gave out. A forced retirement at 16 was brutally tough...
Do you not think my childhood dream was just as improbable?
Considering how rare it is to make the NBA, my parents could have easily told me to quit the nonsense and focus exclusively on school.

Who among us did not dream of playing like Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, or Zinedine Zidane in their prime?
I hope you see the parallel. Dreaming of becoming a world-class athlete is completely normal for a child. It is a necessary spark of ambition and hope: a belief that anything is possible.
In esports, the barrier to entry has shifted: you no longer need expensive club registrations, cleats, or specialized athletic facilities.
A decent computer or console is enough to compete against opponents across the globe. Matchmaking finds an opponent in seconds, and you can win or lose a ranked game in 15 minutes. Competition is now accessible in just a few clicks.
When you aspire to become a true professional in any sport, what does it take? Remember, I am talking about elite performance:
- In track and cross-country, you log grueling miles every week.
- In soccer, you undergo intense team scrimmages, endurance workouts, weight lifting, and video review.
- In basketball, the same applies: countless hours on court combined with physical conditioning and tactical playbooks.
In every discipline, reaching the professional ranks demands thousands of hours and immense personal sacrifices.
If any of you ever pursued competitive athletics at a high level, you know precisely what I mean.
