Stranger Than Heaven: RGG Studio Reveals Like a Dragon Prequel Epic Coming January 2027

Stranger Than Heaven official key visual RGG Studio Like a Dragon prequel reveal TGS 2026

Tokyo Game Show 2026 just delivered its most seismic reveal yet. Moving beyond the immediate future of the Like a Dragon saga, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA took the stage at Makuhari Messe to announce Stranger Than Heaven, an all-new franchise set to launch on January 15, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, complete with a day-one debut on Xbox Game Pass.

Far from disconnecting from the developer's crime syndicate pedigree, this project serves as a sweeping foundational prequel detailing the origin of the legendary Tojo Clan, highlighted in our Tokyo Game Show 2026 complete recap.

The 50-Year Odyssey of Makoto Daito

Players step into the shoes of Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American outcast carving out survival in post-war Japan. Over a five-decade narrative arc, Daito climbs through the criminal underworld to establish the criminal empire that would dictate the destiny of Kamurocho for generations.

The campaign spans five distinct historical eras across five meticulously realized Japanese cities, including Kokura, Kure, and Minami. Each decade shifts architecture, fashion, licensed vehicles, and underground economies, immersing players in half a century of cultural evolution.

Independent Limb-Based Combat & Showbiz Management

Gameplay introduces a ground-up rework of RGG's signature brawling through an independent limb-based control scheme. Players can independently trigger left and right arm punches or directional leg sweeps, allowing for surgical counters and fluid street combos against multiple armed foes.

Outside of combat, Daito manages underground music venues and retro cabarets in a deep "Showbiz Empire" simulation system. Filling venues, curating performers, and winning over influential patrons generates syndicate revenue and directly unlocks advanced character traits and combat abilities.

Toei Company Collaboration: A Homage to "Battles Without Honor and Humanity"

To cement the game's hard-boiled pedigree, SEGA unveiled an official partnership with the legendary Toei Company. The trailer directly channels the iconic brass soundtrack, freeze-frame title cards, and raw 1970s pacing of Kinji Fukasaku's groundbreaking film series Battles Without Honor and Humanity (1973).

While SEGA noted that this stylistic homage does not represent the exact gameplay experience or audio design of the final title, the tribute was met with huge acclaim by cinema and gaming purists at Makuhari Messe. A line of exclusive physical merchandise celebrating the collaboration was also revealed for the Japanese domestic market.

Live-Action Film in Development at Netflix

SEGA also confirmed that a feature film adaptation of Stranger Than Heaven is already in active production alongside Netflix, illustrating the immense commercial ambitions behind this new intellectual property.

As confirmed on our 2027 video game release calendar, Stranger Than Heaven is poised to open 2027 with a thunderous statement of intent from RGG Studio.
