Ancient Rome in Codename Mars and a Mobile Return to Jerusalem: Two Unannounced Assassin’s Creed Games Surface at Ubisoft

Less than a week after Ubisoft stated that its development teams are focusing on brand-new historical settings rather than additional remakes, two unannounced projects have surfaced from the publisher's internal systems. According to details shared on November 6 by French content creator and longtime franchise leaker j0nathan (@xj0nathan), two new entries have been spotted in Ubisoft's backend: Assassin’s Creed Codename Mars, which reportedly takes the series to Ancient Rome, and Assassin’s Creed Codename Pocket, a mobile spin-off set in Jerusalem.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Mars: Visiting Ancient Rome After Origins?

Named after the Roman god of war, Codename Mars was reportedly corroborated by two separate sources with access to Ubisoft's backend infrastructure. While the franchise previously visited Rome in 2010's Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Ezio Auditore's campaign took place at the dawn of the 16th century during the Italian Renaissance. Stepping back into Ancient Rome would deliver one of the community's most requested historical eras.

At this early stage, the project's lead studio, core structure, and main protagonist remain under wraps. However, two primary narrative connections have emerged around the Roman setting:

  • A direct continuation of Assassin’s Creed Origins: Released in 2017, the Egyptian chapter concluded with Aya (assuming the name Amunet) sailing to Rome to establish a Hidden Ones bureau in the Pantheon district. Setting a mainline entry in the Roman Empire would directly pick up the thread left open nearly a decade ago.
  • Potential ties to Netflix's live-action series: The upcoming Assassin’s Creed television adaptation in production at Netflix is also set in Ancient Rome around 64 AD, more than 1,400 years before the events of Assassin’s Creed II.

A Distant Horizon Shaped by Codename Hexe and Internal Shifts

Independent journalist Tom Henderson confirmed that he had also heard the Mars and Pocket codenames behind the scenes, though he noted that neither project could yet be independently verified to full production status. The franchise's long-term roadmap has undergone significant adjustments following the departure of former series executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté.

For now, Ubisoft Montreal's next flagship entry remains the top priority on consoles and PC. As franchise content head Jean Guesdon recently explained when Ubisoft shared its Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe development update for 2027, the team is taking its time before unveiling gameplay, with internal reports suggesting the release window could shift into 2028. Consequently, even if Codename Mars moves into full production, an official reveal is not expected before 2029 or 2030.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Pocket: Short-Form Trials in Jerusalem

The second leaked project, Assassin’s Creed Codename Pocket, is described as a mobile title designed for iOS and Android devices. Its setting brings the Brotherhood back to Jerusalem, one of the iconic cities featured in the original 2007 Assassin’s Creed, where Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad operated during the Third Crusade. Whether the mobile spin-off revisits that exact medieval era or explores a different period in Jerusalem's history has not yet been specified.

Rather than replicating a massive open-world RPG on smartphones, Codename Pocket reportedly opts for a more focused, arcade-friendly structure:

  • Trial-based missions: The gameplay loop is said to resemble the stealth, combat, and score-attack structure of the Mastery Challenge mode from Eivor's saga, arriving right as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla received its final New Game+ update.
  • Stylized visual direction: Its art style reportedly draws inspiration from recent Prince of Persia releases such as The Lost Crown.
  • A new mentor figure: Players will reportedly be guided through their missions by a mentor character named Myriam.

While Ubisoft has not officially commented on either codename, both projects align with the publisher's late October franchise briefing, which ruled out further remakes after Black Flag Resynced in favor of new historical settings alongside the multiplayer project Codename Invictus.
