Incursion Red River Hits All-Time Steam Player Peak as Massive 1.4 Update Overhauls the PvE Extraction Shooter

Incursion Red River Update 1.4 Outskirts map and KAC LAMG light machine gun

First launched into Early Access in April 2024, the tactical co-op extraction shooter Incursion Red River has officially reached a major milestone. Fueled by the rollout of its massive Update 1.4 and a 20% discount bringing its price down to $17.59 (from $21.99), the military shooter developed by German studio Games Of Tomorrow GmbH just shattered its all-time concurrent player record on PC.

From 400 to Nearly 2,500 Concurrent Players: A Major Resurgence on Steam

Live tracking data from SteamCharts and SteamDB highlights a dramatic turnaround for the modern-day Vietnam extraction shooter. After peaking at just 400 concurrent players in October 2026 (with a monthly average of 198 active operators), the deployment of Patch 1.4.0.0 propelled the game to a new all-time high of 2,462 to 2,478 concurrent players this weekend. That surge finally eclipses its previous lifetime peak of 2,365 players set during its original Early Access debut in April 2024.

Unlike cutthroat PvPvE competitors where a single extract camper or cheater can ruin a forty-minute raid, Games Of Tomorrow built its core loop strictly around solo and four-player co-op PvE operations. While hardcore veterans still regularly check our active Escape from Tarkov promo codes and gear guide to stay competitive, a growing wave of tactical shooter fans is turning to customizable PvE sandboxes that let you tune enemy difficulty without sacrificing realistic gunplay.

New Outskirts Map, Armored Convoys, and Laser-Guided Airstrikes

According to the official patch notes published on the official Incursion Red River Steam store page, Update 1.4 is the largest overhaul in the project's history. While the patch resets mission and safehouse progression (leaving player stashes and inventories completely intact), it introduces a brand-new urban combat map called Outskirts alongside newly unlocked building interiors and flanking routes across the existing Delta map.

Every deployment now features deeper tactical agency and dynamic world events across all regions:

  • Infil Point Selection and In-Raid Traders: Operators can now choose their exact entry point before deploying, visit an in-raid trader on every map, and protect high-value loot inside a dedicated Secure Container.
  • Armored Convoys and Airdrops: Dynamic supply drops and heavily armed convoys now roam every map. Players can equip the new Laser Rangefinder (LRF) to paint targets and call in devastating airstrikes, or hunt down a specialized night-time Boss Convoy on Delta.
  • Expanded Campaign and Voice Acting: Five new missions (three main story contracts and two side quests) expand the faction war, backed by returning voice acting from Jane Perry (best known as Diana Burnwood in Hitman and Selene in Returnal).
  • Deep Medical and Survival Systems: Alongside a new food and hydration system, a reworked medical suite introduces heavy bleeding and bone fractures treated with CAT tourniquets, aluminum splints, saline and blood IV bags, and adrenaline or morphine injectors.

Rebuilt RED:FOR AI Director and Install Size Cut in Half

The centerpiece of Update 1.4 is a ground-up rebuild of the game's RED:FOR AI. Managed by a new centralized AI Director that offloads bot calculations from the main CPU thread to boost frame rates, enemy squads now behave like coordinated infantry units. Bots patrol in column and wedge formations, methodically "slice the pie" around tight corners, hold overwatch while teammates flank, and actively lower their rifles into a low-ready stance when a friendly soldier crosses their line of fire.

Powered by a dynamic Danger Zone System, enemy combatants actively steer clear of doorways piled with fallen comrades, evade smoke and gas clouds, and react to players tossing loose bullet casings to create distractions. Following immediate community feedback, the studio also deployed Hotfix 1.4.0.1 to dial back default bot grenade accuracy and ensure enemies can no longer spot infrared lasers without night vision goggles.

On the arsenal and technical front, gunsmith enthusiasts gain seven new weapons: the KAC LAMG light machine gun, the CMMG MK-47, the M14, Norinco M305, and Kel-Tec RFB battle rifles, plus the suppressed AS VAL and VSS Vintorez chambered in 9x39mm SP-5 and BP rounds. Even better, the developers compressed the game's storage footprint from roughly 80 GB down to 40 GB while adding Intel XeSS upscaling, LPVGI global illumination without Lumen overhead, and Frame Generation support for AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs.

My Take

Games Of Tomorrow deserves real credit for sticking to its vision. For a long time, Incursion Red River lived in the shadow of bigger extraction shooters, held back by stiff bot behavior and heavy Unreal Engine 5 performance demands. By rebuilding its enemy AI from scratch, adding tactile movement upgrades like high mantling and tactical sprint, and slicing the install size in half to 40 GB, Update 1.4 transforms the game's pacing. At under $18 on sale, it stands out as the most player-friendly PvE extraction sandbox on Steam for anyone who wants tense Vietnam firefights without dealing with extract campers or live-service grind.
