4.13% VR Share and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Silicon: Valve's $1,059 Steam Frame Claims 6th Place Among Steam VR Headsets

Valve Steam Frame VR Headset Top 10 Steam Hardware Survey

Following its release in the latter half of September at a steep $1,059 (€1,049 / £889) for the 256GB base kit, the Valve Steam Frame has officially completed its first full calendar month on the market. According to the newly published October 2026 data from Valve's official Steam Hardware & Software Survey, the standalone and wireless-streaming headset captured 4.13% of all VR headsets connected to Steam, vaulting straight into 6th place overall.

After registering a modest 0.41% share during its partial launch window at the end of September, the Steam Frame posted a massive monthly gain of +3.72 percentage points in October, the largest upward surge of any virtual reality device on the platform. This hardware milestone arrives alongside an equally notable month for Valve's broader hardware telemetry, which also saw the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 reclaim the #1 GPU spot on Steam while Linux surged to 3.95%.

Steam Frame Already Overtakes PlayStation VR2, Oculus Rift S, and HTC Vive

In just thirty days of full availability, Valve's second-generation VR headset has already leapfrogged several long-standing PCVR mainstays and lower-priced competitors. With its 4.13% share of surveyed VR headsets, the Steam Frame now sits ahead of the Oculus Rift S (3.26%), the Sony PlayStation VR2 running via its PC adapter (2.41%), the original HTC Vive (2.00%), and Windows Mixed Reality headsets (1.79%).

That rapid adoption places Valve's new hardware right on the heels of the 5th-place Pico 4 (4.50%) and within striking distance of its own wired predecessor, the Valve Index HMD, which still commands 4th place at 9.90% more than six years after its original debut.

Against a $1,059 Price Wall, the Meta Quest Trio Still Commands 60.5% of Steam VR

While breaking into the Top 10 immediately is a major achievement for a headset starting above a thousand dollars, and reaching $1,299 (€1,279 / £1,089) for the 1TB model, the broader PCVR landscape remains firmly dominated by Meta's aggressive hardware pricing. On its own, the Meta Quest 3 accounts for 27.27% of all headsets on Steam, backed by the enduring Quest 2 at 22.23% and the entry-level Meta Quest 3S at 11.04%.

Combined, those three standalone headsets represent over 60.5% of every VR unit plugged into or streaming from a Steam PC. For players who already own a capable gaming rig and want crisp pancake optics and wireless SteamVR streaming at roughly half the cost of Valve's kit, Meta's flagship remains the most accessible value proposition on the market.

Why are PC enthusiasts willing to pay more than double the price of a Quest 3 for Valve's hardware? As we covered when Valve officially unveiled the $1,059 Steam Frame standalone headset bundled with Half-Life: Alyx, the device was engineered from the ground up to eliminate the traditional bottlenecks of wireless PCVR.

Instead of relying on standard XR silicon, Valve equipped the Steam Frame with a 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor (8-core ARM CPU and Adreno GPU) paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Running an Arch Linux-based build of SteamOS alongside the FEX x86-to-ARM translation layer, Proton, and open-source Turnip Vulkan drivers, the headset can run supported Windows and Linux Steam titles locally on ARM while doubling as an uncompromising wireless PCVR receiver.

Every retail box includes a dedicated 6GHz Wi-Fi 7 wireless adapter that creates a direct point-to-point link with the user's gaming PC, bypassing congested home routers entirely. Combined with built-in eye tracking, the headset leverages Foveated Streaming to allocate maximum bitrate directly to where the player's pupils are focused across its dual 2160 × 2160 per-eye LCD panels (adjustable from 72Hz to 144Hz through 110-degree custom pancake lenses). And for anyone stepping into high-end PCVR or testing Valve's wireless pipeline for the first time, the studio's flagship VR shooter remains the definitive benchmark.

My Take on the Spec Sheet

Capturing 4.13% of the entire Steam VR market and landing in 6th place during its very first full month on shelves is a remarkable engineering statement for a $1,059 headset. Many observers expected that four-figure price tag to confine the Steam Frame to a tiny niche behind Meta's Quest ecosystem, yet PC enthusiasts clearly value what Valve built under the hood: native SteamOS integration, the FEX x86-to-ARM translation layer backed by 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and rock-solid wireless PC streaming via the bundled 6GHz dongle and eye-tracked foveated transport. In the interest of full transparency, we have not yet had the Valve Steam Frame in our hands at the lab: if Valve's hardware team would like to send over a review sample so we can put its Wi-Fi 7 encoding latency and optical clarity through our full real-world testing protocol, our lab doors are wide open.
