9 R.I.P. sequel Nintendo Switch Key Art

Right in time for Halloween week, Idea Factory International and developer Otomate have officially launched 9 R.I.P. sequel in North America and Europe exclusively on Nintendo Switch. Available now digitally via the Nintendo eShop and in physical retail editions, this direct follow-up reunites players with high school student Misa Isshiki and the nine supernatural love interests of the original horror-romance visual novel.

Two Distinct Story Arcs: Heavenly Routes and Godly Routes

Designed as a direct narrative continuation and fan-disc for players who completed the first entry, 9 R.I.P. sequel builds directly upon the original game's two major conclusions: Final Act. Heaven and Final Act. God. Rather than retelling the initial mystery, the sequel splits each bachelor's story into two contrasting paths that examine the aftermath of Misa's choices between the living world and the afterlife:

  • Heavenly Routes (Direct Sequel Stories): Picking up immediately after the original Heavenly Endings, these chapters test the fragile peace Misa and her supernatural partner fought to achieve. Darker emotional obstacles, unresolved karmic rules, and psychological tension resurface as the boundary between life and death tightens once again.
  • Godly Routes (Four-Season Epilogues): Following the Godly Endings, these segments deliver warmer, bittersweet slice-of-life reflections across all four seasons, focusing on romantic milestones and quiet intimacy after the supernatural storm has passed.

All 9 Supernatural Love Interests and Japanese Voice Cast Return

Brought to life once again by character illustrator Yuuya (Cupid Parasite, Café Enchanté), the sequel brings back all nine romanceable spirits, demons, and urban legends across its four realm categories. Much like other atmospheric Japanese spooky releases arriving this week such as Village in the Shade with its Yomawari-inspired night curfew, audio immersion plays a major role thanks to the full returning Japanese voice cast:

  • School Ghost Stories: Kureha (voiced by Toshiki Masuda) and Sena (Tetsuya Kakihara).
  • Urban Legends: Koharu (Yōhei Azakami) and Yukimaro (KENN).
  • Other Realm (Hell & Underworld): Kōyō (Ryōta Suzuki), Minami (Nobuhiko Okamoto), and Seiya (Shinnosuke Tachibana).
  • Spirit World: Hibiki (Shun'ichi Toki) and the spirit guardian Toka (Amatsuki).

My Perspective

Splitting the structure between cozy, four-season Godly epilogues and high-stakes Heavenly sequels is a smart move by Otomate that keeps this release from feeling like hollow fluff. While pure fan-discs often lean solely on sugar-coated romance, preserving the eerie folklore tension that made the original 9 R.I.P. stand out gives returning players genuine narrative closure. Launching it right before Halloween, alongside a packed autumn horror slate that includes A Pet Shop After Dark on November 12,makes it an easy recommendation for visual novel fans who already cleared Misa's first journey.
