Climbing Colossal Govu Giants, Active Parrying, and Early 2027 Delay: Inside Korean Dark Fantasy ARPG VANRAN

Originally slated for a December 2026 launch when it was first unveiled back in January, the dark fantasy action RPG VANRAN has officially shifted its release window to early 2027. Independent South Korean developer BECUZUS, led by director Sungjae Lee, confirmed the slight schedule adjustment during the ID@Xbox Fall 2026 Showcase alongside a new gameplay trailer highlighting its colossal boss encounters and momentum-driven swordplay.
A Smart Shift to Early 2027 Across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S
Moving the release window just a few weeks past December 2026 allows BECUZUS to steer clear of the crowded holiday slate and position its debut near the top of the 2027 video game release calendar. The extra polishing window covers a simultaneous launch across PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
On PC, the studio's official Steam listing reveals remarkably approachable hardware requirements for a modern dark fantasy action title. The minimum specifications call for an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 paired with 12 GB of RAM and DirectX 11, while the recommended setup targets an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with 16 GB of RAM and DirectX 12, requiring 50 GB of storage space.

Scaling Colossal Govu Giants and Mastering the Chain System
What immediately separates VANRAN from other upcoming Korean dark fantasy contenders like The Relic: First Guardian is its emphasis on vertical boss warfare. The Demon Realm is home to towering, monumental beings known as the Govu. Rather than restricting players to slashing at ankles from the ground, BECUZUS has designed multi-stage vertical encounters reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus and Dragon's Dogma. As the developer puts it on Steam, in order to kill a God in VANRAN, you must first learn to climb one.

On the ground and inside trap-ridden dungeons, combat revolves around three core pillars:
- The Chain System: Built to bridge traversal and swordplay into a single continuous flow, rewarding players who maintain forward momentum with guard breaks, rapid chain shifts, and brutal dismemberment finishers.
- Active Parrying: Instead of relying on passive blocking, players can catch the kinetic momentum of an incoming enemy strike and redirect it back while weaving in and out of striking range.
- Coordinated Enemy Tactics: Foes execute group maneuvers and synchronized combo attacks in real time, while scalable difficulty settings and newcomer support options keep the combat accessible without watering down the challenge for veteran players.
Caleb's Rebellion and Influences From Dante's Divine Comedy
The narrative follows Caleb, a veteran warrior who stood as the shield of the Northern Frontier for a hundred years. After watching the royalty he swore to protect cast hundreds of souls into the abyss, Caleb rose in rebellion. Betrayed by his former brothers-in-arms who became his executioners, he chose to plunge into the abyss himself rather than fall to their blades.
Now a fallen human slave trapped in the Demon Realm, Caleb wields a mysterious sealed blade to ignite a new uprising torn between salvation and vengeance. BECUZUS draws direct inspiration from Western literary classics including Orpheus and Eurydice and Dante's Divine Comedy. After a structured opening chapter, the world opens into non-linear routes where player choices alter enemy states, uncover hidden lore, and directly shape the ending.
My Take
Stepping out of December 2026 into early 2027 is easily the smartest move an independent team like BECUZUS could make. Launching a brand-new dark fantasy IP at the tail end of the year would have risked burying the game under holiday blockbusters. What genuinely excites me about VANRAN is how it merges fast-paced, deflection-heavy swordplay with full vertical climbing across the giant Govu bosses. If the camera and climbing physics hold up in the heat of multi-stage battles, this could be one of the standout action RPG surprises of early 2027.
