Stronghold 4 Delayed to April 20, 2027: FireFly Studios Adds the Full Economic Campaign to Day-One Early Access

Medieval castle builders will need to keep their trebuchets in storage for a few extra months. Originally slated to launch on December 7, 2026, on PC, Stronghold 4 has officially had its Early Access release pushed back to April 20, 2027. British developer FireFly Studios confirmed the decision through studio head Nick Tannahill, opting to give its Unreal Engine 5 real-time strategy and castle-sim sequel four additional months in the oven rather than rushing out the gates during a packed holiday window.
Steam Next Fest Feedback Drives the Stronghold 4 Delay
The irony of postponing the project shortly after locking in the December date was not lost on the London-based team. According to Tannahill, the primary catalyst behind the move is the sheer volume of player feedback gathered from the game's second public demo during Steam Next Fest. Thousands of strategy fans tested the skirmish and free build missions, highlighting key areas where siege pacing and unit responsiveness needed extra work.
As detailed on the official Stronghold 4 Steam page, that public demo lacked the full unit roster and finalized enemy AI routines. Shifting the launch to April gives FireFly Studios the breathing room required to refine enemy lord behavior, implement community-requested quality-of-life improvements, and steer clear of an overcrowded December release schedule.

Full Economic Campaign Moved Up to Day-One Early Access
To make the extra wait worthwhile, FireFly Studios is turning the delay into a major content upgrade for the April 20, 2027 launch. Originally planned as a post-launch roadmap update during Early Access, the full Economic Campaign will now be playable right on day one. Because castle simulation, taxation, and resource production chains lie at the very heart of the franchise, the team decided not to launch without a dedicated peaceful sim campaign alongside its military warfare.
When the gates open next spring as part of the 2027 video game release calendar, the initial Early Access version of Stronghold 4 will feature a comprehensive lineup of modes:
- Full Story Campaign focused on medieval siege warfare and military strategy.
- Full Economic Campaign now included directly at launch instead of a later update.
- Custom Skirmish featuring upgraded AI behavior shaped by Steam Next Fest feedback.
- Skirmish Trail offering a progression of tactical siege challenges.
- Free Build Mode tailored for castle architects who want to build without military pressure.

My Take
As a longtime PC RTS veteran who spent hundreds of hours obsessing over granary ratios and moat layouts in the original Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, I would much rather wait four extra months than play an unfinished build in December. Launching a mainline Stronghold into Early Access without its economic campaign or finished enemy AI would have been a massive misstep. The Steam Next Fest demo proved that the core castle-sim DNA is still magnetic, but siege games live and die by unit pathfinding on ramparts and ruthless AI lords. Moving the full economic campaign into the April 20, 2027 launch build shows that FireFly Studios is using this delay to deliver a genuinely complete foundation on day one.
