RuneScape 4 on Unreal Engine: How a Single Expansion Turned Into Jagex’s Next Standalone MMO

Major gaming conventions rarely deliver true franchise shakeups without prior leaks, yet RuneFest 2026 managed exactly that. To close out its weekend celebration with the community, British developer Jagex stunned attendees by officially confirming that a brand-new standalone MMORPG set in the world of Gielinor is currently in active development, operating under the working title "RS4".

From a Survival DLC to an Unreal Engine MMORPG

The origins of this next-generation title reveal an unexpected development pivot. The project initially began as an ambitious expansion for the studio's survival title, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. However, as gameplay prototypes evolved and playtesters voiced an appetite for traditional, deep multiplayer systems, the scope expanded far beyond the boundaries of an add-on. Recognizing the creative momentum, leadership decided to spin the concept off into a dedicated fourth-generation MMORPG built from the ground up on Unreal Engine.

Switching to a modern third-party engine represents a massive visual departure from the proprietary technology that powered Gielinor for decades. It reflects the broader hardware upgrades sweeping the PC gaming ecosystem, while allowing developers to deliver grander vistas, vertical terrain, and dynamic lighting. Jagex confirmed that despite the visual leap, core franchise values such as permanent account progression and sandbox depth remain non-negotiable foundations.

The Sixth Age and the Untamed Frontier of Ashenfall

Narratively, RS4 unfolds during Gielinor's Sixth Age. The journey begins in Ashenfall, an untamed landmass located northeast of the mainland that players first glimpsed in Dragonwilds. The timeline sits years after the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, meaning civilization and the regional ecosystem have dramatically shifted in the wake of that cataclysm.

The development team stressed that Ashenfall is strictly the prologue. As the game matures through development and post-launch support, the world will expand toward iconic regions familiar to veteran adventurers, alongside completely unmapped territories across the broader Gielinor map.

No Disruption for Old School RuneScape or RuneScape 3

Addressing immediate player concerns regarding fragmentation, Jagex explicitly stated that RS4 is not intended to replace existing games. Both Old School RuneScape and RuneScape 3 will continue normal live operations, supported by their respective dedicated development squads, ongoing content updates, and independent roadmaps. The new MMO is designed to stand alongside them as an alternative way to inhabit the universe rather than a forced successor.

While the full game remains several years away from release, Jagex intentionally announced the project early to replicate the community co-development model that fueled OSRS. Player feedback will directly shape mechanics, interface decisions, and balancing from pre-alpha phases onward. An initial glimpse of this visual direction was shared during the event keynote.
