Matthew Mercer Voices a Sadistic Puppet in Mr Magpie's Harmless Card Game: Coming to PS5, Xbox Game Pass, and PC in Early 2027

Behind its deceptively cheerful title and stitched felt grin, Mr Magpie's Harmless Card Game turns a corporate performance review into a lethal game of office Russian roulette. Developed by indie team Giant Light Studios and co-published by Behaviour Interactive (under its Miss Behaviour label) alongside Gambit Digital, this surreal corporate horror roguelike deckbuilder has officially locked in its console launch alongside a major voice cast reveal: Matthew Mercer.
Matthew Mercer Voices the Most Unhinged Middle Manager in Deckbuilding
A fixture of modern voice acting known equally as the longtime Dungeon Master of Critical Role and for iconic video game roles such as Minsc in Baldur's Gate 3, Cassidy in Overwatch, and Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil, Matthew Mercer steps into the role of Mr. Magpie. This smiling, deeply unhinged middle-management puppet keeps players trapped inside a nightmarish office environment where the only way to survive the shift is to hit absurd quarterly cash targets before closing time.
Much like Inscryption traded traditional fantasy taverns for a sinister woodland cabin, Giant Light Studios swaps the candlelit table for flickering fluorescent tubes and passive-aggressive HR jargon. Every round is framed as a mandatory productivity exercise designed to demonstrate your continued value to the company, overseen by a puppet boss who treats a missed quota as a capital offense.

Minesweeper Deduction Meets High-Stakes Synergies: Watch Out for JERRY
On the table, Mr Magpie's Harmless Card Game sets itself apart from standard roguelike deckbuilders by combining Balatro-style combo scaling and deck manipulation with the grid-based logical deduction of Minesweeper. You flip cards across the board to earn cash and uncover positional clues about neighboring tiles, constantly weighing whether to push your luck for a bigger payout or cash out before triggering a fatal workplace incident.
The entire loop revolves around one non-negotiable workplace rule: avoid the JERRY cards at all costs. Hidden across the spread, JERRY cards trigger immediate and permanent termination if flipped without a safeguard. Between high-pressure rounds, you can spend your hard-earned cash inside Mr. Magpie's supply closet to draft new cards, unlock game-warping global Perks, or invest in the company's internal SHARES system to rig future payouts in your favor.
Playable Steam Demo Live Now Ahead of Early 2027 Launch on Xbox Game Pass and PS5
Beyond the card table itself, Giant Light Studios features multiple distinct employee character classes that reshape your starting strategies, alongside a free-roaming walkabout mode between runs. Players can stand up from the desk to explore the unsettling corners of the office floor, piecing together the dark secrets Mr. Magpie conveniently left out of the employee handbook. At a time when Steam has already surpassed 21,388 game releases in 2026, players on PC can test the waters right now through an expanded free demo available on Valve's storefront.
The full version of Mr Magpie's Harmless Card Game is scheduled to launch in early 2027 (Q1 2027) across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store). Even better for subscribers, the game will launch Day One on Xbox Game Pass, making it one of the standout indie entries on the 2027 video game release calendar.
My Take
Ever since Inscryption and Balatro rewired expectations for what a card game can be, plenty of indie studios have chased that blend of eerie atmosphere and addictive number-crunching without quite nailing the balance. By fusing Minesweeper deduction with biting corporate horror, Giant Light Studios has built a core loop where every single card flip carries genuine dread. Casting Matthew Mercer as a chipper, homicidal HR puppet is the icing on the cake: his ability to pivot from warm corporate pep talk to icy menace in half a breath fits this office nightmare like a glove, and having it land Day One on Game Pass in early 2027 makes it an easy day-one play for me.
