Shattered Visor and Cracked Armor: New Metroid Ravenous Screenshot on Switch 2 Puts a Wounded Samus Front and Center

Sometimes a single close-up tells you everything you need to know about the stakes of a mission. Ahead of the launch of Metroid Ravenous on Nintendo Switch 2, a striking new screenshot placing Samus Aran front and center ignited fan discussions over the weekend after being shared across social media, notably highlighted by Japanese industry tracker @Genki_JPN. Far from a pristine heroic pose, the image captures the legendary bounty hunter in a battered, critical state that underscores the ruthless tone crafted by Spanish studio MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD.

A Gouged Helmet and Fractured Visor Dissected Pixel by Pixel

In this tight frontal shot, every scar across the Power Suit reflects the ferocity of the opening ambush. The crimson plating on the right side of Samus’s helmet is gouged open, exposing raw silver metal beneath the impact craters. Her iconic green visor is spider-webbed with deep fractures, framing a piercing, unwavering blue-green gaze. Just below the jawline, one of the helmet’s lateral breathing tubes has been cleanly severed, while the other hangs damaged beneath her chin guard.

For a community accustomed to analyzing every frame between mainline entries, the close-up immediately sparked intense scrutiny. As X user @isbestmee pointed out, any new glimpse of Samus prompts fans to zoom in on every single pixel for lore clues. Some longtime players, including @LinkM1922, suggested the framing echoes classic communication-room sequences from earlier installments, while others like @Geo__Dragon joked that ever since the X Parasite outbreak in 2002’s Metroid Fusion on Game Boy Advance, Samus has barely had a moment to catch her breath.

Ambushed on an Uncharted Moon With Predatory New Metroid Powers

The heavy battle damage aligns directly with the official premise outlined by Nintendo during the game’s September reveal. Serving as the sixth mainline 2D installment and the direct sequel to 2021’s Metroid Dread, Metroid Ravenous begins after Samus crash-lands on an uncharted moon. Immediately upon emerging from the wreckage, she is ambushed by a mysterious faction of assassins clad in dark and crimson cloaks and metallic conical hats. Severely wounded in the assault, she is cast into a sprawling subterranean labyrinth and forced to fight her way back to the surface.

Built around a survival theme of “eat or be eaten,” the gameplay leans heavily into the predatory awakening of Samus’s Metroid DNA. Alongside the return of MercurySteam’s signature melee parry, Samus can now lunge with a magenta-lit left claw to siphon life force and absorb new abilities directly from her enemies. A wall-warping dash and water-running mechanics further expand her traversal toolkit, all running with HDR and up to 120 Hz display support as a flagship pillar of the growing Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive lineup.

Launching January 28, 2027 Exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2

Developed exclusively for Nintendo’s new hybrid hardware, Metroid Ravenous is set to kick off the year when it arrives on January 28, 2027, marking one of the first major milestones on the 2027 video game release calendar. Alongside the standard retail and digital release, Nintendo will offer a Special Edition featuring a custom SteelBook case as well as a standalone Samus (Metroid Suit) amiibo.

My Perspective: Why a Vulnerable Samus Makes MercurySteam’s Formula Hit Harder

What stands out to me most in this screenshot is how effectively MercurySteam uses visual storytelling through Samus’s suit and eyes alone. In Metroid Dread, her body language behind the visor conveyed quiet authority without needing long monologues. By shattering her helmet right at the start and forcing her to rely on raw Metroid instincts to survive underground, Metroid Ravenous flips the dynamic: a cornered, wounded Samus is far more terrifying than the assassins hunting her. Paired with 120 Hz responsiveness on Switch 2, January cannot come soon enough.
