Nearly 20 Years After Eye of the North, Original Guild Wars Revives Xotecha in the Afterlife Expansion

Twenty-one years after its original launch and nearly two decades since Eye of the North (2007), the original Guild Wars refuses to sit quietly in the MMORPG museum. Following the momentum of Guild Wars Reforged, developer ArenaNet and co-development partner 2weeks have officially announced Guild Wars Afterlife, the classic game's first new premium DLC expansion in almost 20 years. Slated to arrive in early 2027 across PC and mobile platforms, the expansion takes players deep into the Mists to the long-lost island of Xotecha, shaking up two decades of muscle memory with an ever-changing dungeon and a cross-profession skill-drafting combat system.

Xotecha and the Cult of Odran: The Ghost of Guild Wars Utopia Finally Lives

For veteran Tyrian adventurers, the mere mention of Xotecha carries nearly twenty years of history. Originally, this Mesoamerican-inspired realm inside the Mists was designed as the centerpiece of Guild Wars: Utopia, the fourth standalone campaign that ArenaNet canceled back in 2007 to pivot toward Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2. Now, that legendary piece of cut lore is finally becoming playable reality.

In Guild Wars Afterlife, players bring their existing characters to Xotecha to answer a distress call from the Order of the Moonless Night. This faction watches over the Unformed, a shifting jungle of shared dreams, cenotes, and floating ruins where memories manifest into physical form. The Order acts as shepherds for wayward spirits, helping them reconcile with the tragedies of their mortal lives before their anguish twists them into beings of pure rage known as Nightmares.

Deep within the Mists, the island of Xotecha blends lush jungles, golden arches, and floating ruins.

Recently, however, waves of lost souls have flooded the Unformed. With one of its elders missing and the mysterious Cult of Odran meddling in the affairs of the afterlife alongside Ancient Golems, the Order of the Moonless Night enlists your party to hold back the Nightmare tide.

The Unformed and Skill-Drafting: Breaking the Eight-Skill Profession Barrier

Beyond its lore revival, Guild Wars Afterlife introduces a roguelite-inspired gameplay loop that diverges sharply from traditional campaigns like Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall. When you step into the Unformed with your existing characters (either with friends or accompanied by henchmen), your standard character progression and inventory temporarily evaporate in the Unformed Mists.

Each expedition is built around dynamic systems designed for high replayability:

  • Skill-Drafting Combat: After choosing a starting loadout, you draft new abilities as you progress through each run. Crucially, drafted skills are no longer restricted to your primary and secondary professions, allowing you to assemble custom skill bars pulling abilities from any profession in the game.
  • An Ever-Changing Dynamic Dungeon: No two runs through the Unformed play out the same way. As the Mists weave lost memories around your party, you face a randomized sequence of jungle maps, cenotes, floating ruins, encounters, and bosses.
  • Dual-Layer Progression: Completing runs unlocks both meta-progression upgrades that alter future expeditions inside the Unformed and permanent rewards that your characters can take back outside of Xotecha into the rest of Tyria.

At a time when the resurgence of old-school class design philosophy in World of Warcraft: Forever is fueling fierce debate across the MMO community, removing profession restrictions from the iconic eight-skill bar of Guild Wars opens the door to wild new theorycrafting synergies.

My Take: Xotecha Finally Avenged and the Genius of the Eight-Skill Bar Unleashed

Watching ArenaNet deliver a full premium expansion for the original Guild Wars in 2027 is already a minor industry miracle, but ArenaNet and 2weeks have aimed straight for the heart of longtime fans. Resurrecting Xotecha, the fabled setting of the canceled Utopia campaign that players have wondered about since 2007, is an incredible nod to the franchise's heritage. Even better is how the gameplay loop honors the original combat engine. From day one, the eight-skill bar of Guild Wars was designed like a collectible card game deck inspired by Magic: The Gathering. By turning the Unformed into a cross-profession skill-drafting roguelite mode, Afterlife isn't just coasting on nostalgia: it is finally letting players push one of the deepest buildcraft engines in RPG history past its traditional class walls.
