Manual Reloads, Two-Handed Lancer Aiming, and King Raven Turrets: New PC VR Mod Turns Gears of War: E-Day Into a Full First-Person Shooter

Just two weeks after launching on PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S, Gears of War: E-Day is already getting a dramatic perspective shift thanks to the PC modding community. Independent developer rockonthehill has released a nearly three-minute gameplay trailer showcasing a work-in-progress virtual reality conversion for the entire single-player campaign.

Full-Body IK, Manual Reloads, and First-Person Cover Combat
Rather than settling for a basic stereoscopic camera hook, this custom conversion leverages The Coalition's Unreal Engine 5 foundation to build full physical presence in first person. With full-body inverse kinematics (Full-Body IK) already implemented, players step directly into Marcus Fenix's COG armor and handle weapons physically using motion controllers.
Captured directly from the current development build, the 2-minute and 53-second showcase highlights several core mechanics already working in VR:
- Full Campaign VR Support: Complete stereoscopic rendering tailored for the entire Emergence Day story campaign.
- Manual Reloads and Weapon Switching: Physical magazine swaps under fire and holistic weapon holstering directly on the player's body.
- Two-Handed Weapon Aiming: Stabilized dual-hand grip for the signature Lancer assault rifle (including up-close chainsaw bayonet executions) and the Gnasher shotgun.
- Dynamic Cover Mechanics: Blind-firing, vaulting over barriers, and tactical cover transitions adapted for a first-person VR perspective.
- Mounted Set-Pieces: Full motion-controlled operation of the heavy rotary turret aboard the King Raven helicopter.
Rendering Unreal Engine 5 environments in stereoscopic VR naturally demands serious GPU headroom beyond the standard Gears of War: E-Day PC system requirements and 130 GB install footprint.
100% Free Release Focused Strictly on the Single-Player Campaign
Built in compliance with Microsoft's Game Content Usage Rules, the VR conversion targets the single-player campaign exclusively. By staying strictly out of competitive Versus and Horde modes, the project avoids any conflict with online anti-cheat protections following a launch window that already weathered a targeted DDoS attack against the game's matchmaking servers.
On the official Ko-fi project page and Reddit (r/GearsOfWars), rockonthehill notes that the mod remains an active work in progress while visual glitches and animation transitions are being ironed out.
Crucially, the developer confirmed that once development is complete, the Gears of War: E-Day VR mod will be released completely free for everyone on PC. Optional donations on Ko-fi simply support development time and do not lock early builds or exclusive features behind a paywall.
My Take: Experiencing Emergence Day Eye-to-Eye With the Locust Horde
Gears of War: E-Day was built from the ground up as a third-person cover shooter, yet witnessing the fall of Kalona and standing eye-to-eye with towering Locust drones in first person completely transforms the game's sense of scale and horror.
In my view, what sets rockonthehill's work apart is the commitment to full-body IK, two-handed aiming, and manual reloads rather than a simple headset camera mod. Having a full-featured VR campaign conversion released for free is a massive win for PC players looking to replay Emergence Day from a terrifying new angle.
