Neither Heavy Emulation Nor Official Remaster: Forza Horizon 2 Finally Runs on PC in 4K 60 FPS

Forza Horizon 2 running on PC with Azimuth wrapper in 4K 60 FPS

In the modern history of open-world racing games, Forza Horizon 2 held a uniquely frustrating position. While the third, fourth, and fifth entries all received official PC releases, the 2014 Mediterranean road trip remained permanently trapped on the Xbox One. Capped at 30 frames per second at an original 1080p resolution, Playground Games and Turn 10's fan-favorite title never had the chance to unleash its full graphical potential on modern PC hardware. That historical gap is now officially closed: the Azimuth project has launched on itch.io, delivering the game's very first unofficial PC port.

A Native Wrapper Rather Than Heavy Emulation

Behind this impressive technical achievement stands independent developer Almost There Games. Unlike traditional emulation solutions such as Xenia, Azimuth is not a resource-heavy emulator designed to simulate every single piece of Xbox One hardware. Because the Xbox One architecture is already built around x86 silicon remarkably close to desktop PCs, the tool acts as an ultra-lightweight native compatibility layer.

Azimuth intercepts the console-specific WinRT system calls and translates them directly into standard Win32 interfaces that Windows understands. This seamless translation bridge sidesteps the massive performance overhead typical of full emulation, allowing the original game code to execute at near-native speeds.

DirectX 12, Native 4K, and Solid 60 FPS

The real magic happens inside the rendering pipeline. The original DirectX 11.X shaders and commands built for the Xbox One are transpiled on the fly into modern DirectX 12. Modern graphics cards can therefore flex their compute power without hitting the architectural bottlenecks of the 2014 console.

The visual payoff is striking. The legacy 30 FPS console lock is completely removed, unlocking a rock-solid 60 frames per second and higher. The sun-drenched coastal roads of Nice, the winding hills of Sisteron, and Tuscan villages render in crisp native 4K. The High preset built into the wrapper pushes rendering distance far beyond the original release, sharpens shadow resolution, enhances environmental reflections across the iconic Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4, and enables full 16x anisotropic filtering.

Steam Deck Support and Strict Legal Boundaries

Engineered for contemporary systems, Azimuth runs smoothly on Windows 11 while providing complete compatibility with the Steam Deck through Valve's Proton layer. Enthusiasts gaming on Windows handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally X20 can also take the Mediterranean festival on the road at full speed.

Almost There Games has established clear legal boundaries. The project does not distribute any copyrighted game data whatsoever. Players must legally supply their own dumped Xbox One game files from version 1.0.0.64. Furthermore, the experience remains strictly single-player and offline: Xbox Live services, online multiplayer, and achievements are not supported.

Twelve years after its console debut, Forza Horizon 2 finally gets the glorious high-framerate showcase it always deserved on PC.
