"Why Remake What I Already Made?" : Dynasty Warriors Producer Rejects the Remaster Trap

Tomohiko Sho Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered

In a modern gaming landscape frequently paralyzed by risk-averse remasters, safe nostalgia packaging, and corporate hesitation, Omega Force veteran Tomohiko Sho just delivered a remarkably candid reality check. Following the global launch of Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, the veteran franchise producer made it unequivocally clear that he has zero desire to spend his remaining active years remaking his own past achievements.

Speaking with Japanese outlet 4Gamer in a post-release discussion, Sho was questioned regarding whether other beloved PlayStation 2 entries missing from digital storefronts might receive a similar Unreal Engine 5 overhaul. Rather than offering customary corporate evasion or vague marketing commitments, Sho offered an unfiltered assessment of the production process: "To be honest, I don't want to do it. It would be almost a complete remake, and even this time I sometimes thought, 'Why am I remaking something I made myself?'"

For Sho, the creative conflict comes down to the stark mathematical reality of time. "I'm in my fifties now, and I sometimes think about how many more games can I make before I retire, so I'd rather make new games or sequels," he explained. Modernizing a classic 2001 release under Unreal Engine 5 is anything but a superficial resolution bump. Rebuilding two-decade-old architecture, rendering thousands of battlefield soldiers with modern ragdoll physics, integrating the Xtreme Legends standalone expansion, and implementing modern counter-mechanics like Just Evasion and Perfect Power Guard required engineering resources practically equivalent to developing an entirely original production.

For a game director who personally helped pioneer the entire tactical action genre at Koei Tecmo over two decades ago, spending several years retracing his own footprints represents a frustrating detour. Sho understands that audience enthusiasm for retro preservation remains genuine and passionate. The wave of community interest generated by the Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered demo translated directly into Very Positive launch ratings on Steam, proving that classic Three Kingdoms battlefields still command strong commercial appeal.

While Sho acknowledged that commercial success could reasonably encourage Koei Tecmo executives to explore further remasters, he emphasized that should those projects move forward, he would gladly hand directorial reins to younger developers within Omega Force while keeping his own schedule reserved for new titles and ambitious sequels. For a creative lead with finite studio cycles left, delegating legacy maintenance is the only way to avoid stagnation.

Building on the design innovations established by Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Sho remains committed to pushing large-scale tactical warfare forward rather than curating past triumphs. In an industry where major publishers increasingly view past successes as safe financial annuities, his refusal to turn his career into a self-curated museum stands as an inspiring affirmation of creative ambition. True evolution in gaming requires stepping onto uncharted ground, even when walking familiar corridors feels far more comfortable.
