5 Players Online and Live Choice Voting: Directive 8020 Drops Free Multiplayer Update Ahead of Halloween

Directive 8020 free 5-player online multiplayer co-op mode update on PS5 Xbox Series X|S and Steam

Five months after its initial May 12, 2026 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Directive 8020: A Dark Pictures Game is finally delivering the connected feature fans of interactive horror have been waiting for. Supermassive Games rolled out a major free update on Monday, October 19, 2026, unlocking five-player online cooperative multiplayer aboard the colony vessel Cassiopeia just in time for Halloween game nights.

Custom and Round Robin Modes With Hybrid Location Mixing

Previously restricted to local Movie Night couch sessions, the fifth mainline entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology now brings its shape-shifting alien paranoia to online lobbies. According to the official patch notes published by Supermassive Games on Steam, groups can freely mix and match their geographic setups: five players can connect from five separate homes, or two friends sharing one living room can team up online with three others in another location.

To keep everyone on edge while surviving the mimicry predators stalking Tau Ceti f, the update introduces two distinct online rulesets:

  • Custom Mode: Translates the classic couch co-op structure online. Each participant selects their crew members at the start of the campaign (dividing Brianna Young played by Lashana Lynch, Cernan, Stafford, Eisele, Cooper, and Carter) and takes direct control whenever their assigned character steps into the spotlight.
  • Round Robin Mode: Drops fixed character ownership altogether. Instead, active control rotates between connected players after a set timer expires, forcing the next person in line to immediately handle whatever life-or-death crisis the previous player triggered.

Live Choice Voting, 13 New Premonitions, and Retro Silver Spacesuits

Beyond passing the controls over the network, the patch introduces Choice Voting during narrative crossroads and Turning Points. Whenever the active player faces a high-stakes dilemma, everyone else in the lobby can cast a live vote on screen to guide or sabotage the outcome. The interface displays exact vote percentages and player tags next to each dialogue or action branch, leaving the person in control free to obey the majority or go rogue. That blend of cooperative survival and friendly betrayal echoes the group tension driving HeroQuest: Digital Edition on Steam, where shared decision-making quickly turns into psychological mind games.

Supermassive Games has also bundled extra single-player and multiplayer content into today's patch. Players exploring the hull of the Cassiopeia can now hunt down 13 new Premonitions, the signature Dark Pictures collectibles that reveal brief flashes of potential fatal outcomes before they happen. In addition, a free wardrobe DLC equips the crew with retro silver space suits, leaning into classic sci-fi horror aesthetics alongside upcoming deep-space thrillers like Unreal Engine 5 survival horror title Laica.

Platform Availability, Network Rules, and Price Comparison

The free online multiplayer update for Directive 8020 is live now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Before setting up a five-player lobby, keep two official technical limitations in mind: the online mode does not support cross-play across different hardware families, and every remote household joining the session must own a copy of the game.

My Benchmark Take: Launching a sci-fi horror story built entirely around alien mimicry and crew paranoia without online play back in May felt like a missed opportunity. Adding timed Round Robin swaps and live Choice Voting indicators on screen finally turns voice chat into the chaotic blame game Directive 8020 was meant to be. Still, the lack of cross-play and the absence of a Friend's Pass in late 2026 create a steep entry barrier for five separate buyers, making the hybrid local-plus-online lobby option the smartest way to split the bill.
