Clockwork Revolution Confirmed for 2027: 750,000 Words of Dialogue, Time Travel in Avalon, and Day-One Xbox Game Pass Launch

After turning heads with its ambitious world-building and dark humor, Clockwork Revolution officially has a target launch window: Xbox Game Studios and inXile Entertainment have confirmed that the time-bending first-person action RPG will drop in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Built on Unreal Engine 5 and helmed by game director Chad Moore and principal designer Jason Anderson alongside studio head Brian Fargo as producer, the steampunk adventure stands as the largest project in the studio's history.
An Xbox Series X|S Console Exclusive Launching Day One on Game Pass
Regarding platform availability, Xbox Game Studios has outlined a clear release strategy: Clockwork Revolution will launch as an Xbox console exclusive on Xbox Series X|S with no PlayStation 5 version planned, alongside a simultaneous PC release via Steam and the Microsoft Store. As a first-party production, the game will be included Day One on both Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
Players who prefer buying the game outright will also benefit from full Xbox Play Anywhere support, meaning a single digital purchase grants access across both Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC with shared progression and saves. With its 2027 window locked in, inXile's flagship RPG joins an increasingly stacked 2027 video game release calendar for Microsoft's ecosystem.

Morgan Vanette, Lady Ironwood, and Avalon's 750,000 Words of Dialogue
The narrative of Clockwork Revolution unfolds in Avalon, a Victorian-era steampunk metropolis where steam locomotives soar overhead and wealthy elites replace their natural limbs with ornate clockwork prosthetics. Players step into the boots of Morgan Vanette, a fully customizable protagonist (spanning physical appearance, background, skills, and moral choices) who runs with the Rotten Row Hooligans gang in the impoverished slums of The Tangle.

Morgan soon discovers that Avalon's ruthless ruler, Lady Ironwood, has been secretly exploiting time travel to alter pivotal moments in the city's history, keeping the working class impoverished while cementing her own wealth and political stranglehold. Highlighting the sheer depth of role-playing reactivity, studio head Brian Fargo revealed that the writing team had already penned more than 750,000 words of dialogue, with in-game official reports and character conversations shifting dynamically based on how you build your character from the opening creation screen.
The Chronometer, Prentice, and Gunfights That Pull Bullets Back Into the Barrel
At the heart of both exploration and storytelling is the Chronometer, a time-travel device linked to Prentice, a flying automaton companion. Travelling back to alter key historical turning points sends massive butterfly effects rippling into the present: citizens change fates, faction allegiances shift, and entire districts of Avalon physically transform when you return.
In combat, first-person gunplay combines modifiable period weaponry (including revolvers, lever-action repeaters, and customized Gatling guns) with steam-powered gadgets and time-bending abilities. Players can freeze enemies in their tracks, rewind environmental destruction, and even pull fired bullets right back into the chamber of their weapon. To help deliver a project that Brian Fargo describes as ten times more ambitious than anything inXile has built before, the team has also partnered since January 2024 with co-development studio Shapeshifter Games, founded by veteran developers from Volition, underscoring Xbox's push for deep role-playing experiences alongside titles like Playground Games' upcoming Fable reboot.
My Perspective
It is tough not to get excited about the direction Clockwork Revolution is taking. Reuniting Chad Moore and Jason Anderson, two of the creative minds behind the cult classic Arcanum, on a first-person RPG that blends BioShock Infinite's striking steampunk aesthetic with sharp writing and 750,000 words of reactive dialogue is exactly the kind of bold swing Xbox Game Pass thrives on. If the Chronometer truly delivers on its promise and our tampering with Avalon's past genuinely reshapes whole neighborhoods and NPC lives rather than just toggling a few surface-level scripts, inXile has a defining 2027 RPG on its hands.
