Urban Climbing Meets Tokyo Folk Horror: BrokenLore ASCEND Sets January 7, 2027 Launch on PS5, Xbox and PC

BrokenLore ASCEND leap above Tokyo skyline from Elysium Tower on PS5 Xbox and PC

The dangerous addiction to digital clout crashes directly into primal acrophobia and Japanese supernatural legend. Independent studio Serafini Productions has locked in the official launch date for BrokenLore: ASCEND, its upcoming first-person psychological survival horror game built around high-altitude urban free-climbing. The title will officially arrive on January 7, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

The Forbidden Ascent of Elysium Tower and the Rokurokubi

The narrative follows Ren and Yui, two prominent rooftoppers celebrated across social media for their viral channel SKYLIMIT. Driven by an unrelenting hunger for internet fame and the constant need to outdo their previous stunts, the pair plans their most audacious feat yet: an illegal nighttime ascent of Elysium Tower, the tallest skyscraper in Japan, intended to produce the defining video of their careers.

What was supposed to be a triumph of viral bravado quickly deteriorates into a psychological nightmare. High above the streets of Tokyo, an ancient entity from Japanese folklore known as the Rokurokubi begins stalking them across the exposed metal girders. Appearing as a woman bearing an ornate ceremonial mask and a spectral, elongating serpentine neck, the apparition embodies the climbers' deepest existential dread: the terror of becoming forgotten, irrelevant, and stripped of validation. As they push upward toward the spire, reality distorts and the physical environment begins to warp around their fraying sanity.

First-Person Vertigo, Realistic Stamina and High-Altitude Stealth

Gameplay in BrokenLore: ASCEND sets itself apart through a seamless blend of authentic free-climbing mechanics and suffocating psychological horror. Through an intimate first-person perspective, the game conveys sheer vertigo against the backdrop of Tokyo's sprawling cityscape. Players must calculate each handhold, monitor grip stamina, and carefully navigate narrow girders and sheer drop-offs where any hesitation can prove fatal.

Beyond vertical traversal, the experience incorporates tense stealth sequences where players must conceal themselves from the Rokurokubi's roving gaze while clinging to precarious ledges. Much like the eerie psychological tension found in Japanese survival horror titles like ANOMALITH, the dread stems from total vulnerability rather than raw firepower. Every breath, shifted weight, and echoed sound can alert the creature. For Ren and Yui, stopping the ascent means surrendering their identity, but reaching the peak may cost them their lives.

Expanding the BrokenLore Horror Universe

With ASCEND, Serafini Productions expands its signature BrokenLore anthology following well-received indie horror entries such as BrokenLore: LOW and BrokenLore: FOLLOW. This upcoming release represents the studio's most ambitious project to date, engineered to take advantage of modern console hardware and high-end PC performance.

My opinion

Pairing authentic urban rooftopping physics with Japanese folkloric horror is an inspired direction. The vertigo delivered by the first-person perspective looks genuinely unsettling, and using the dread of losing online relevance as the psychological catalyst behind the Rokurokubi's presence makes the narrative feel sharp and contemporary. If the tactile climbing mechanics and stamina management deliver responsive tension, ASCEND could easily be one of the standout horror surprises of early 2027.
